The address is just a small part of what SpamBayes looks at when deciding how to classify a message. This is good news, because it means that the odds are good that any message you receive from a given address will be properly categorized. It's possible for spam to pretend to come from someone you trust. The program seemed to load okay and sort the initial messages, but now I am not able to ?Delete as Spam? from the toolbar. I tried resetting the toolbar as instructed in your troubleshooting FAQs but that did not work. As for the second advice of resetting my outlook toolbar, I cannot seem to find the file that you mention (outcmd.dat). I am using Microsoft Vista and have the latest version of Spam Bayes. That is, do you have SpamBayes putting suspected spam in a different folder from where Outlook/Exchange puts suspected junk? If so, you're quite right that my initial hypothesis was incorrect. If SpamBayes is just doing a bad job of filtering your messages, it might be worth retraining it from scratch. Also, please note that SpamBayes does not filter based on the sender, or more accurately, the sender is one of many factors that SpamBayes uses to score messages. If you get messages from someone you trust who sends you messages that have content similar to messages that you're trained as spam, you may have to train a lot of messages from that sender before SpamBayes gets it right. If all else fails, you can set up an Outlook rule to move messages from senders you trust before SpamBayes processes them. Just move them to a folder that SpamBayes is not set up to filter. ________________________________ From: Douglas B McAdams [mailto:dbmcadams at transportinvestments.com] Sent: Thursday, August 09, 2007 2:50 PM To: Jesse Pelton Subject: RE: [Spambayes] Problem What I expect to happen is: I click on something in my "Spam Suspects" I then click on "Recover from Spam" and thereafter the sender's e-mail address is not sent to the "Spam Suspect" file, and instead goes directly to my "Inbox." Pam, That's a good thing, because there isn't a way to "whitelist" or "blacklist" specific email addresses. Read here for the not-too-gory details about that: http://spambayes.sourceforge.net/faq.html#why-don-t-you-add-whitelisting-blacklisting-to-spambayes Skip From jsp at PKC.com Tue Aug 14 19:38:51 2007 From: jsp at PKC.com (Jesse Pelton) Date: Tue, 14 Aug 2007 13:38:51 -0400 Subject: [Spambayes] Not receiving good mail In-Reply-To: References: Message-ID: <16E2027582CDB74180896CDB4B8CC1F905CC8C06@PKCVT01.pkc.com> That's because SpamBayes does not pay special attention to the sender's address. All the content of the message, including the sender, is ranked according to the probability that it is spam, based on your classification of earlier messages. The probability that the entire message is spam is calculated from those rankings. So, if messages from friends are getting classified as spam, that's because SpamBayes thinks they look like spam, based on the training you have done. The usual thing to do is to tell SpamBayes when it has misclassified something (by dragging the message to the correct folder or using the Spam or Not Spam button; eventually you'll provide enough hints that SpamBayes will correctly classify messages. With Outlook, you can also set up a rule to move messages from specific senders. You'd want to move them to a folder that SpamBayes is not set up to filter. But, of course, if a spammer sends you a message that pretends to be from a friend, you won't get SpamBayes' benefit. -----Original Message----- From: spambayes-bounces at python.org [mailto:spambayes-bounces at python.org] On Behalf Of Pam Stark Sent: Tuesday, August 14, 2007 12:36 PM To: spambayes at python.org Subject: [Spambayes] Not receiving good mail System is locking out a 'good' friends messages. Outlook is a part of the Microsoft Office suite, so you'll have to pay for it. On home computers the mail client is often Outlook Express. Outlook Express is a "freebie", it came with your Windows for no extra cost. Despite the name, "Outlook" and "Outlook Express" are two totally different programs. Outlook is a very advanced piece of software (some would say too complex), Outlook Express is very simple (some would say too simple). The fact that you say that you have a toolbar at the office, proves that you use Outlook at the office, because Spambayes only has a toolbar for Outlook. Spambayes never had, and probably never will have, a toolbar for Outlook Express. For the simple reason that Outlook Express doesn't support toolbars. Message-ID: <000001c7df5e$61613970$0202a8c0@PeterM> I have a PC with XP operating System. I have downloaded SpamBayes from your website. The Wizard opened and took me through the installation process successfully. However, there is no SpamBayes toolbar on the Microsoft Outlook screen. I have followed the procedure you advise on your website for this problem. i.e. Open Windows Explorer > Documents and Settings\my user name\Local Settings> enter. Still no SpamBayes toolbar? And I still am unable to activate SpamBayes on my PC The second method you recommend on the SpamBayes website does nothing to solve the problem because the Local Settings file is already visible. The guidance notes then suggest resetting this option back to the default value. I do not therefore understand what to process is supposed to have achieved. Windows Explorer>Documents and Settings\username opens a folder that has two files, ?Applications Data? and ?Local Settings? When I click on the ? Local Settings? file it disappears? Rebooting the PC does not bring up the SpamBayes toolbar. Any thoughts/advice on this problem? Regards Peter Moore For clarity ? below is a cut and paste of the information I am following to resolve the problem Process Descriptions This explains some of the processes above in more detail. Determine your installation type. If you are running from Python source code, and installed Python, plus SpamBayes as separate components, then you are running the source code version. If you downloaded an installer .EXE file, then you are running the binary version. Check the log file HYPERLINK "file:///C:\\Program%20Files\\SpamBayes\\docs\\outlook\\docs\\troubleshootin g.html#InstallationType#InstallationType"Determine your installation type. If you are running the source code version, then please see README.txt in the Outlook2000 directory. If you are running the binary version, then the SpamBayes addin writes a log in your Windows temp directory. This directory is generally \WINDOWS\TEMP for Windows 9x, or \Documents and Settings\{username}\Local Settings\Temp for Windows 2000/XP. Note that by default, in Windows 2000 and XP, Windows Explorer will not show the Local Settings directory, as it is hidden. You can convince Windows Explorer to show this directory (and therefore allow you to see the Temp directory under it by doing either: * Select the folder \Documents and Settings\{username}. This directory should be reflected in the Address Bar. In the Address Bar, simply type at the end "\Local Settings" (thereby giving that full path name), and press Enter. Explorer will then show this folder. or * Select Tools->Folder Options, select the View tab, and in the list, select Show hidden files and folders. Select OK. This folder will now be visible. You may like to then reset this option back to the default value. The log file for the most recent execution of Outlook is named spambayes1.log, the second most recent is named spambayes2.log, and so on for the four previous runs. You can view this file with notepad. Usually, you will simply see messages which indicate that SpamBayes is doing its job; however in some cases there will be errors in this file. If there are errors, please HYPERLINK "file:///C:\\Program%20Files\\SpamBayes\\docs\\outlook\\docs\\troubleshootin g.html#ReportABug#ReportABug"report a bug. No virus found in this outgoing message. And I apologise for posting what is a fairly specific installation/compilation question into this mailing list. If I should put it somewhere else, please let me know! I'm running Outlook 2003 on Windows XP x64. I initially installed the 1.0.4 win32 binary release of Spambayes but I got into hot water with outlook (it turns out that was a known issue with DEP and AMD64 and Outlook not getting along, but I didn't know that then). At some stage in the past 2 months, I tried installing the x64 Python windows package and building the spambayes outlook addin using the source. I installed the source package (spambayes-1.1a4\) in my D: drive (this is mapped to My Documents and vice versa). But I had lots of "fun" trying to get the win32 extensions installed into the 64-bit Python application, so I uninstalled Py64 and installed the 32-bit Windows version of Python 2.5, which installed fine. I copied the spambayes-1.1a4 folder to the site-packages folder (as listed in the readme.txt in the outlook2000 folder) under the Python 2.5 installation folder (in other words, it's under C:\Program Files (x86)\Python2\site-packages\spambayes-1.1a4\). I ran setup.py install, which seemed to install the outlook addin just fine, and it has successfully worked since then. The problem I'm having is that I tried to use the notifications options to play with sounds. The browse buttons didn't appear to do anything, but if I typed the path to the soundfile in the appropriate edit control, SpamBayes used 2 of the sounds properly (the unknown and spam notifications), but the known good notification sound ignored whatever value is in the edit field. I did some more digging, and I ran the manager.py script in the outlook2000 folder (under the program files folder) (with outlook closed down and not in the process list!). The spambayes manager window appears, and now when I click any of the browse buttons, I get the following result in my command line window (please note that I've also included the header info to verify where I'm running this script from, etc): [c:\program files (x86)\python25\lib\site-packages\spambayes-1.1a4\outlook2000]manager.py Loaded bayes database from 'C:\Documents and Settings\Pete\Application Data\SpamBayes\default_bayes_database.db' Loaded message database from 'C:\Documents and Settings\Pete\Application Data\SpamBayes\default_message_database.db' Bayes database initialized with 1392 spam and 1181 good messages ... The first (and hopefully the simplest) is that the button click event is not being handled by the code (and I would ask if anyone else sees the same problem with this version of spambayes - or is it just me?) The second issue is a bit more confusing. The path listed in the traceback (i.e. D:\Data\SpamBayes\spambayes-1.1a4\Outlook2000\dialogs\) does not exist anymore on this system - the original windows binary installation was installed there, but I (thought that I) properly uninstalled the binary windows32 package version of spambayes (or I thought I did, it's no longer in the installed applications list or on the hard drive or in the registry that I can find). What on earth have I done wrong, and how can I fix it? This problem speaks more about the reliability and robustness of the spambayes installation than about my idiotic installation problems - you've got a really well-behaved application here! I'm very impressed (if mystified as to what I've done). I apologise again for the shotgun message, and if anyone can point me in the right direction or the right resource, I'd be most grateful. I'm happy to take this problem off-line if that's more appropriate too. Thanks in advance, Peter Peter Naus Audio Engineering Manager Audiography 20 Churinga Avenue, Mitcham. Victoria. 3132. Great piece of software!!! I was thinking about the use of flat file database on the local system running Outlook (in my case Outlook 2k3). Have you given any thought to running a central database on a local network SpamBayes 'Server'? Forgive me, I am a visual person, I would like to "show" you what I was thinking... PC # 1 w/ Outlook2k3 + SpamBayes Plugin --->[PC w/ network DB engine (MySQL)] PC #... w/ Outlook2k3 + SpamBayes Plugin --->[db Table: 'SpamBayes' ] PC # N w/ Outlook2k3 + SpamBayes Plugin --->[ ] If the PCs on the local network could update a central network accessible database engine table (i.e. 'MySQL' server) then the available spam database for the entire subnet would grow exponentially... instead of individually. Would not this approach improve a faster growth, broader application, and improved response to the evolving techniques used to distribute Spam and bypass the 'one-PC-outlook-plugin-on-your-own' approach to spam filtering? I wish SpamBayes would also keep a list/db of offending network address path information within the email internet headers... would be extremely useful to generate statistical reports for frequently encountered offending IPs etc. What do you think about these ideas? For example, here are some IP bits from a few random messages I have in my mailbox right now: 'url-ip:194.109.207.14/32': 0.35; 'url-ip:194.109.207/24': 0.35; 'url-ip:194.109/16': 0.35; 'url-ip:88.198/16': 0.09; 'url-ip:88/8': 0.09 ; 'received:192.168.1': 0.21; 'received:10.3.1': 0.16; 'received:10.3.1.93': 0.16; 'received:209.191': 0.16; 'received:66.35.250.225': 0.16; You can then analyze them at your leisure. Check for rogue .pyc files on your PC - both in the "old" and "new" locations. You can probably remove any that you find, and they will be rebuilt. It is known that if you simply move .pyc files to another location, they may refer to the original location in tracebacks - but this isn't really considered a "bug" (and regardless, would not happen in a binary install) ? > I apologise again for the shotgun message, and if anyone can point me in > the right direction or the right resource, I'd be most grateful. To solve the problem, Outlook disabled Spambayes. After that I only had the SpamBayes symbol in Outlook, but without any function. Yesterday I tried to reinstall the newest version and disabled SpamBayes as a COM-Add-In and delete the SpamBayes toolbar. Than I closed Outlook and run the setup. Everything worked fine, but after starting Outlook again, I had no SpamBayes toolbar, but Spambayes was listed as a COM-Add-In again. And now - my question: How can I manage to get the toolbar back...? Without it I am not able to use SpamBayes as an Outlook Add-In. It is configured so the spam messages are managed in a folder named ?SPAM? and unsure messages are managed in a folder named ?Junk Suspects?. The Outlook Junk Mail option is not enabled, but e-mails from the addresses in the Blocked Senders list are moved to the ?Junk E-mail? folder. For about a year or so, mail was being filtered properly, but just recently, it stopped working. Instead of messages being properly filtered in the ?SPAM? and ?Junk Suspects? folder, most of the e-mails are being moved into the ?Junk Suspects? folder now. When I try to manually classify the e-mail by using the Delete As Spam and Recover From Spam buttons, the messages are not being moved. If I close Outlook and reopen it, I sometimes will be able to manually classify a few messages, but then it stops working again. I have tried to uninstall/reinstall SpamBayes, but it didn?t resolve the issue. Attached is the log file. Any suggestions are appreciated. You should check out the Akismet service. It was originally developed for WordPress, but there are also implementations for other software. I personally use it for Drupal. Sedeep, I added a core_server.py application to the latest SpamBayes alpha distribution. It was written with the intent that web applications and other non-email apps could use it to train and score submissions. It supports an XML-RPC interface so you should be able to talk to it from apps written in just about any common language. The top-level README.txt file has some usage information. It's only been tested on Unix systems (I developed it on a Mac, and the Python bug tracker runs it on Linux), so if you want it to run on Windows you might have a little work to do (maybe cygwin or mingw would be sufficient there). If you have any questions, drop me a note. -- Skip Montanaro - skip at pobox.com - http://www.webfast.com/~skip/ From invitations at shelfari.com Thu Aug 30 22:47:47 2007 From: invitations at shelfari.com (raool) Date: 30 Aug 2007 13:47:47 -0700 Subject: [Spambayes] Do we like the same books?
