The email is then resubmitted to exim and the delivery itself takes place. Emails tagged as "ham" or "unsure" are delivered to the user's mailbox whereas emails tagged as "spam" are not. By default, a system-wide database is being used to filter the emails. But a personalized database can be used to filter each user's emails. A dedicated web interface, the "SpamViewer" allows each user to: * view how his/her recent emails were classified, * have recent "spam" emails (normally retained by the filter) delivered to his/her mailbox (false positives!), * use his/her corpus of recent emails to train his/her own filter. Details of implementation can be found here: https://wiki.bri.nrc.ca/wiki/tiki-index.php?page=SpamViewer+installation Cheers. -- Christophe Deprez christophe.deprez at bri.nrc.ca ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Institut de Recherche en Biotechnologies / Biotech. Becky, You don't indicate what mail client you use on your Mac. If you use Mail.app, it already comes with a spam filtering capability that I believe uses techniques similar to SpamBayes. I don't use Mail.app on my Mac, but use SpamBayes nonetheless. There is no binary installer, so you'll have to download the source distribution and install it, however you can integrate it with other mail programs in a number of ways. I use the sb_bnfilter program (part of SpamBayes) run by procmail (part of the Mac's software suite), then use the SB results to segregate the mail by spaminess. My mail reader then reads mail from the various mailboxes. Grammar checking is difficult, but various methods of generating tokens based on spell-checking have been evaluated in the past, and found to be ineffective. For example: [ 817813 ] Consider bad spelling a sign of spam http://sourceforge.net/tracker/index.php? func=detail&aid=817813&group_id=61702&atid=498106 I suspect that the problems with this include: * Many people 'misspell' words in legitimate email (abbreviations, slang, proper nouns, typos, and so on) * Spam that tries to hide behind misspelled words is generally already caught; it is other spam (e.g. image-based) that really causes problems these days. This is perhaps a more corpus-dependent feature than others - for example, I suspect that on a primarily business-orientated email stream the results would be somewhat better (since work email tends to be better spelt, although there are certainly plenty of exceptions to that rule). I haven't done any tests, but my expectation would be that grammar checking would be even worse, since few English-as-a-first-language speakers have any idea of what correct English grammar is. (I expect that, for example, comma splices and incomplete sentences would be just as common in ham as in spam). =Tony.Meyer -- Please always include the list (spambayes at python.org) in your replies (reply-all), and please don't send me personal mail about SpamBayes. http://www.massey.ac.nz/~tameyer/writing/reply_all.html explains this. This is really an Outlook question, not a SpamBayes one (SpamBayes just moves messages between folders - there's no difference between deleting a message that SpamBayes classified as spam and any other message). If it's not in the Outlook "Deleted Items" folder, then it may not be recoverable. If the message was in a local "Personal Folders" (pst) file (not an IMAP server, Hotmail, or Exchange) then if you haven't "compacted" the PST file, there are utilities that can recover messages (Google will find them). =Tony.Meyer -- Please always include the list (spambayes at python.org) in your replies (reply-all), and please don't send me personal mail about SpamBayes. http://www.massey.ac.nz/~tameyer/writing/reply_all.html explains this. SpamBayes should be able to do this, with any user that has the appropriate rights (enough to both read and move messages). It wouldn't matter which user did this, although it should probably just be one, with only that user using the "Delete as Spam" and "Recover from Spam" buttons (or there would be two databases being used). However, I recall messages to spambayes at python.org in the past that have indicated that there have been problems with this. I don't recall what the resolution of those were. The thing to do is try it - if the messages aren't filtered, then post a copy of the most recent log to this list (not spambayes- dev at python.org - that's for discussion about the development of SpamBayes). =Tony.Meyer -- Please always include the list (spambayes at python.org) in your replies (reply-all), and please don't send me personal mail about SpamBayes. http://www.massey.ac.nz/~tameyer/writing/reply_all.html explains this. The most important spam clue is the URL you are supposed to click. Unfortunately, the domain changes frequently. It's unlikely you'll see the same one more than once or twice. Any new domain will be unknown, thus unused. I've been using Matt Cowles' x-lookup-ip extension for several days, precisely to combat these spams. While all those domains are different, they all resolve to the same IP address. Using Matt's extension I get a lot of spammy clues: % spamcounts -r :211 Loading state from /Users/skip/hammie.db (hammie.db) database hammie.db is an existing ZODB, with 38 ham and 127 spam token, nspam, nham, spam prob url-ip:211.144.69/24,2,0,0.908163265306 received:211.160.160.49,1,0,0.844827586207 received:211.160,1,0,0.844827586207 received:211,2,0,0.908163265306 url-ip:211.47/16,1,0,0.844827586207 url-ip:211.144/16,6,0,0.96511627907 url-ip:211.115/16,1,0,0.844827586207 received:211.210.242.58,1,0,0.844827586207 url-ip:211.115.108/24,1,0,0.844827586207 url-ip:211.115.97.43/32,1,0,0.844827586207 url-ip:211.115.99.161/32,1,0,0.844827586207 url-ip:211.47.67.16/32,1,0,0.844827586207 url-ip:211.115.101/24,1,0,0.844827586207 url-ip:211.115.97.44/32,1,0,0.844827586207 url-ip:211.144.68.67/32,4,0,0.949438202247 url-ip:211.115.97/24,1,0,0.844827586207 received:211.210,1,0,0.844827586207 url-ip:211.144.68/24,4,0,0.949438202247 url-ip:211.115.99/24,1,0,0.844827586207 received:211.160.160,1,0,0.844827586207 url-ip:211.189.18/24,1,0,0.844827586207 url-ip:211.115.108.104/32,1,0,0.844827586207 received:211.210.242,1,0,0.844827586207 url-ip:211.144.69.244/32,2,0,0.908163265306 url-ip:211.189.18.186/32,1,0,0.844827586207 url-ip:211.115.108.103/32,1,0,0.844827586207 url-ip:211/8,8,0,0.973372781065 url-ip:211.47.67/24,1,0,0.844827586207 url-ip:211.115.101.228/32,1,0,0.844827586207 url-ip:211.189/16,1,0,0.844827586207 Note that www.tikerandevali.com also maps to 211.144.68.87. You might want to try training from scratch. I'm very ready to believe that having the cache persist makes a lot of difference given how Skip uses it. But it wouldn't make much difference to me. Correct. I run my train-to-exhaustion script which retrains on my entire training database. Not having the ip addresses cached to disk means that runs slow every time. I suspect the same would be true of any full-retrain mechanism with x-lookup-ip enabled. If you're just training or scoring on individual messages or have a long-running process like the pop3 proxy that keeps the cache alive in memory the incremental cost is probably not bad. Alice, are you getting the spamarchive.org spam? The volume varies a lot, but there are usually a few hundred spam each day (you might have to vet the automated submissions). Otherwise, you could setup honeypots, or talk very nicely to the Project Honeypot people, and see if they would send some on to you. =Tony.Meyer -- Please always include the list (spambayes at python.org) in your replies (reply-all), and please don't send me personal mail about SpamBayes. http://www.massey.ac.nz/~tameyer/writing/reply_all.html explains this. That's not a reason not to use the Outlook plugin on any client computer that has Outlook. Outlook will let you set up an "account" that picks up its mail from a POP3 server, and that mail gets filtered just as it would if it came in via the usual Exchange protocol. I do that all the time on my home network. I wouldn't try to talk you out of using the proxy if that's what you prefer. But I sure wouldn't use the proxy in a situation where I could use the plugin. My virus definitions are updated daily, but it's always possible for something to get through. As far as my having approved this message as ham 300 times, I rather doubt it. Given the bizarre content, the likelihood that I marked it as ham even once is rather remote. Yes, I know the statistics say that I did, but theirs is absolutely no way that this happened. What is more likely, however, is that it dropped into my inbox over 300 times, and Spambayes failed to recognize it for what it was, so that in each case I manually deleted it as spam, but the program never trained on it--which is what my original message was about--that despite my marking these messages as spam, the program never catches them. Remember--given the content of the message, it is highly unlikely that I marked it as ham even once, let alone 300 times. Eric. Eric A. The system did not block or blacklist emails from entering my inbox (OE). Worse, I got a flood of spam. It seems your system is a target for spammers, like a light is to moths! Or is this some sort of scam?!! I would like someone's response. Graeme Ballantyne graemedeb at paradise.net.nz -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... This project has no connection to anything named anything like "SPAMfighter". What made you think it might? Perhaps you got it from a counterfeit site. If I were a spammer, I'd disguise myself as a spam-fighting tool, spam the world to get them to download my tool, suck their addressbook out and have a golden spam list LOL. Fortunately, I'm not a spammer. And the Spambayes project has nothing to do with SpamFighter. You probably need to contact them directly. Their site is www.spamfighter.com.
