So you're essentially archiving mail in the Trash folder.  This isn't really
a good idea - you'd be much better off moving the mail that you aren't
interested in now (but might be in the future) to some other folder (e.g.
"Archive") and just putting things you want to delete in the Trash.

However, I think that this feature request would give you the functionality
that you're after:

Not exactly what you asked for, but I think it would do what you want.

I have no idea if/when that feature request will be implemented, but you're
welcome to add comments to it, or to write such a patch yourself, of course.
