It's so that you can use the "read" status to indicate that you have reviewed the action taken by Spambayes on the message. For example, you have the option of marking as "read" any messages you manually direct to the "definite" folder, thereby distinguishing them from messages put there automatically. If you don't bother to review the action taken on your messages, you can ignore the fact that any of them are marked "unread".
