On the other hand if *I* select a message and click "Delete As Spam" I'd like the message to be moved to my deleted folder (ie: a human has already verified that it really is spam and it can safely be deleted completely, not moved to "spam"). ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Comment By: Alan Arndt (a_arndt) Date: 2006-05-05 11:38 Message: Logged In: YES user_id=1517573 Personally I would not be in favor of this change, or if done it must have a configuration option. It would be nice if "Delete As Spam" moved the message straight to deleted items. I do not blindly delete anything. I go through the "Possible Spam" folder, clicking "Delete As Spam" or "Recover From Spam" on each message, usually based on the subject. Then I go through the spam folder, deleting or (very rarely...spambayes is good) "Recover From Spam" again for each message, usually based on the subject. Finally, I empty the deleted items folder. With the current behavior, I have to look at each possible spam twice, once to click the "Delete As Spam" and again to move it to deleted items. I don't see why I should have to basically tell the system twice this thing is a spam. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Comment By: Tony Meyer (anadelonbrin) Date: 2006-01-19 01:20 Message: Logged In: YES user_id=552329 I still don't see why this is a problem, given that you have to delete the messages (either manually or with something like autoarchive) in the spam folder anyway. I would not be happy with a patch that deleted the message - a big plus of the Outlook plug-in is that we can safely say that SpamBayes never deletes the user's mail. A patch that adds an option to have clicking the "Spam" button move a message to the Deleted Items folder would be acceptable, IMO. No work has been done on this, and developer time is pretty short at the moment (and more likely to be spent on other things, I expect). I have been using SpamBayes plugin for Outlook for about a month as I get up to 40 SPAM a day. I habitually check and clear my spam folder as I still get the odd false positive message. Messages that I remove from Suspects and (rarely) Inbox using 'Delete as Spam' are moved to my Spam folder where I then have to delete them again. I would like an option so that 'Delete as Spam' trains SB that it is spam and then deletes it. This delete could either move it to Deleted Items or permanently it - is this a secondary option? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Comment By: Tony Meyer (anadelonbrin) Date: 2004-10-06 23:26 Message: Logged In: YES user_id=552329 It looks like from 1.1 the buttons will be called "Spam" and "Not Spam". I suppose we could add a "move to Deleted Items" option where the "mark as read" options are. My main question is whether there is a need for this given that you are presumably clearing out (somehow) the spam folder anyway, does it matter if there are a few extra emails as well? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Comment By: Soulin (soulin) Date: 2004-09-21 08:03 Message: Logged In: YES user_id=1121435 I must agree, in fact I actually wanted to post same thread :) ---------------------------------------------------------------------- You can respond by visiting: https://sourceforge.net/tracker/?func=detail&atid=498106&aid=973376&group_id=61702 From noreply at sourceforge.net Fri May 5 20:45:50 2006 From: noreply at sourceforge.net (SourceForge.net) Date: Fri, 05 May 2006 11:45:50 -0700 Subject: [spambayes-bugs] [ spambayes-Feature Requests-1482685 ] Importance of junk words Message-ID: Feature Requests item #1482685, was opened at 2006-05-05 11:45 Message generated for change (Tracker Item Submitted) made by Item Submitter You can respond by visiting: https://sourceforge.net/tracker/?func=detail&atid=498106&aid=1482685&group_id=61702 Please note that this message will contain a full copy of the comment thread, including the initial issue submission, for this request, not just the latest update. They are of course a blatant attempt to bypass spam filters. To that end I think there should be a change, or perhaps user configurable bias, as to how "new" tokens are ranked in comparision to spam or ham. I certainly haven't done any studies but I know my database contains most of the words I've sent or expect to receive in an e-mail. Any e-mail that contains a large number of new/unknown words is almost certainly a spam. Some way to place a higher weighting on new/unknown words would seem to be welcome. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- You can respond by visiting: https://sourceforge.net/tracker/?func=detail&atid=498106&aid=1482685&group_id=61702 From noreply at sourceforge.net Fri May 5 22:11:15 2006 From: noreply at sourceforge.net (SourceForge.net) Date: Fri, 05 May 2006 13:11:15 -0700 Subject: [spambayes-bugs] [ spambayes-Feature Requests-973376 ] Make "Delete as Spam" *really* Delete the email Message-ID: Feature Requests item #973376, was opened at 2004-06-16 04:50 Message generated for change (Comment added) made by anadelonbrin You can respond by visiting: https://sourceforge.net/tracker/?func=detail&atid=498106&aid=973376&group_id=61702 Please note that this message will contain a full copy of the comment thread, including the initial issue submission, for this request, not just the latest update. Category: None Group: None Status: Open Resolution: None Priority: 5 Submitted By: Skip Montanaro (montanaro) Assigned to: Tony Meyer (anadelonbrin) Summary: note runs of short words Initial Comment: I've recently been seeing a lot of pharmacy spam with few, if any, clues. The message bodies look like this: X j A m N j A d X h M k E z R d I p D u I m A c C o I d A t L j I v S j A j M w B p I q E s N p V a I a A g G z R j A f S b O n M u A p V f A g L m I h U q M b S u A u V o E q n O t V y E n R d r 7 b 0 k % d x W c I n T p H d u O s U h R i b S s H q O p P h ! k http://www.chilreanno.com Followed by some drivel meant to boost "good" words. The URL changes frequently, and like most spam, it seems to come from all over the place, so there are very few clues present for SpamBayes to munch on. The attached patch pays attention to runs of words which are too short for other consideration and emits a token that's the base 2 log of the longest run of such words seen in the message. The result seems to add an extra useful structural token to the mix and makes these particular types of spam less likely to score unsure. I didn't just check it in for a couple reasons. One, I was targetting just a single kind of message. I'm not anxious to get into a SpamAssassin-type escalation of, "hey, this kind of message does this, let's try that", sort of thing. I'd prefer it if the concept was applicable to a broader variety of spams. Two, I no longer have any sort of test database other than my current personal collection of ham and spam (between 300 and 400 messages), so I can't really test it properly to see if it's a net win. Like I said, it seemed to help in this instance. Here's my collection of short:* tokens: token, nspam, nham, spam prob short:7,3,0,0.934782608696 short:6,6,0,0.96511627907 short:5,2,1,0.5 short:4,3,2,0.366449889676 short:3,3,1,0.5 short:2,19,15,0.319154484346 short:1,196,69,0.5 short:0,63,25,0.5 My database is currently a bit unbalanced (5 spams for every 2 hams), hence (I think) the unusual spamprobs. Assigning to Tony just so someone has a chance to give it the once over during the 1.1 alpha phase. I have three corpora that I am testing with at the moment: the (fairly old and small) SpamAssassin Public Corpus, the 2005 TREC Corpus, and about 50,000 messages of my own mail from a few months back. I did a 'timcv.py -n5' with these three. There was basically no change with both the SA and TREC corpora. I suspect that's because those are made up of fairly old messages and this trick wasn't used much until recently. There was a very small win with my messages. My plan is to get a more recent collection of my mail and try it on that, as I've seen these much more in recent times, too, and I suspect it'll do better then. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- You can respond by visiting: https://sourceforge.net/tracker/?func=detail&atid=498105&aid=1475188&group_id=61702 From noreply at sourceforge.net Mon May 8 00:56:21 2006 From: noreply at sourceforge.net (SourceForge.net) Date: Sun, 07 May 2006 15:56:21 -0700 Subject: [spambayes-bugs] [ spambayes-Bugs-1483540 ] Version 1.1a1 will not restart Message-ID: Bugs item #1483540, was opened at 2006-05-07 17:56 Message generated for change (Tracker Item Submitted) made by Item Submitter You can respond by visiting: https://sourceforge.net/tracker/?func=detail&atid=498103&aid=1483540&group_id=61702 Please note that this message will contain a full copy of the comment thread, including the initial issue submission, for this request, not just the latest update. When running the pointer over the icon the dot became red. Right clicking the icon and then selecting "Start Spambayes" does nothing. Category: Outlook Group: Source code 1.0 Status: Open Resolution: None Priority: 5 Submitted By: mewaters (mewaters) Assigned to: Nobody/Anonymous (nobody) Summary: Training Bayes, Cannot Expand top-level folders Initial Comment: I think I've followed the instructions here, but I'm having trouble installing SpamBayes with Outlook 2003 on Windows XP MCE PC. I have an IMAP setup, so I installed from source. Please let me know if this was the wrong thing to do. I had initially run the installer, and I thought it was successful until my screen froze on the SpamBayes training screen. This was when I found out you needed to install from source if you are using IMAP. So then I uninstalled SpamBayes, and tried to do it over, this time installing from source. I downloaded Python 2.4.3., pywin32-208.win32-py2.4.exe, and (mistakenly) spambayes-1.1a2.zip. I ran the installs for the first two, unzipped the third and ran the addin.pl in the Outlook 2000 folder. Installation was unsuccessful because I should have downloaded spambayes-1.0.4.zip. Nothing happened when I ran Outlook to indicate that SpamBayes was installed, except the Toolbar Icons were still there from the initial time I'd used the installer. OK, next I deleted the unzipped spambayes-1.1a2 folder, and downloaded the correct 1.0.4 zip file. I unzipped it, and ran addin.pl. This is basically my current situation. I believe I degistered the addin.pl file and deleted the spambayes-1.0.4 folder once because of the problem that at long last I will describe. In any case, this is the problem that persists, and I am basically unable to configure SpamBayes: Now, when I open Outlook, I get the configuration screen which prompts me to "train" SpamBayes as to what it should consider spam. I click "browse" to designate the portions of my mail folder that contain spam and those which do not. Unfortunately, on the popup box that tells me to select folders, I can only see my top-level folders. All of the sub level folders are inaccessible despite the fact that there is a "plus" box next to each top-level folder. Nothing I do allows me to see what's inside the top level and choose appropriately. My guess is that even though you downloaded the source and ran addin.py you're still using the old version somehow. Perhaps the uninstall didn't complete? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Comment By: Tony Meyer (anadelonbrin) Date: 2006-05-12 13:41 Message: Logged In: YES user_id=552329 If you are using Outlook, then we strongly recommend that you use the Outlook plug-in, and do not run from source. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- You can respond by visiting: https://sourceforge.net/tracker/?func=detail&atid=498103&aid=1486943&group_id=61702 From noreply at sourceforge.net Sat May 13 17:34:18 2006 From: noreply at sourceforge.net (SourceForge.net) Date: Sat, 13 May 2006 08:34:18 -0700 Subject: [spambayes-bugs] [ spambayes-Bugs-1487940 ] Training server error in 1.1a1 Message-ID: Bugs item #1487940, was opened at 2006-05-13 10:34 Message generated for change (Tracker Item Submitted) made by Item Submitter You can respond by visiting: https://sourceforge.net/tracker/?func=detail&atid=498103&aid=1487940&group_id=61702 Please note that this message will contain a full copy of the comment thread, including the initial issue submission, for this request, not just the latest update. However, the most logicaly way to to do this would be to have Spam bayes read this information from the user's address book. If due to security reasons that's not possible then it should be able to analyze an exported outlook CSV file, at which point yes, it would need to hence forth monitor all outgoing mail. However, I think during installation the user should be asked what language(s) they speak and any message that qualifies as not being from one of their chosen languages, that also didn't originate from a friend (someone in their address book) should be deleted. If it is from a known user, it would be awesome if that person was written back reminding them that you only speak swahili (obviously, just for example), and that all messages must be sent in that language. I have waited a little bit to see if the training on German spam had an effect. It did, after a total of 4 weeks, SpamBayes now discovers these messages as spam (0.44 - my cutoff line is 0.35). Probably, there were not enough messages in German and French that SpamBayes could see the difference. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Comment By: Tony Meyer (anadelonbrin) Date: 2004-08-02 23:42 Message: Logged In: YES user_id=552329 Is your ham also mixed language? With English/German/French, SpamBayes doesn't care about the language and will just learn each word as good/bad, so should work fine (with appropriate training). Have you trained on these sorts of spam? Attaching the clues for a misclassified message would give more insight into this. The Japanese is more difficult, because SpamBayes creates tokens by (mostly) splitting on whitespace, and this isn't how Asian languages work (we would get sentence tokens, I think). It's unlikely that we will ever handle this well, and the best solution would be to have someone (willing to do all the work) create a forked project that has a different tokeniser, customised for Asian langauges. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- You can respond by visiting: https://sourceforge.net/tracker/?func=detail&atid=498106&aid=1000427&group_id=61702 From noreply at sourceforge.net Tue May 23 22:53:23 2006 From: noreply at sourceforge.net (SourceForge.net) Date: Tue, 23 May 2006 13:53:23 -0700 Subject: [spambayes-bugs] [ spambayes-Bugs-1493835 ] Delete as Spam Doesn't Delete Anything Message-ID: Bugs item #1493835, was opened at 2006-05-23 13:53 Message generated for change (Tracker Item Submitted) made by Item Submitter You can respond by visiting: https://sourceforge.net/tracker/?func=detail&atid=498103&aid=1493835&group_id=61702 Please note that this message will contain a full copy of the comment thread, including the initial issue submission, for this request, not just the latest update. Category: Outlook Group: 1.1.x Status: Open Resolution: None Priority: 5 Submitted By: robert (elitemrp) Assigned to: Kenny Pitt (kpitt) Summary: Outlook.exe will not terminate when launched via mailto Initial Comment: I first ran into this problem a few months ago at work. But at the time I thought it was related to a custom program we run here. But now I noticed I can easily reproduce the problem on any computer running SpamBayes+Outlook 2003 on Windows XP. Basically, I will open Outlook via the icon to read mail. I will then close Outlook, and if I have Task Manager open, I will see that Outlook.exe closes correctly. Now if I launch a mailto: link (or use a program that launches a new mail), where the Compose Mail window opens, but not the actual outlook program, the problem occurs. If I close the compose mail window, by either clicking Send, or closing it without sending, the OUTLOOK.EXE task will not exit. If I launch Outlook again, I'll now have multiple instances of OUTLOOK.EXE in task manager. Now the multiple instances is what caused the problem with our custom software at work, but that has nothing to do with the fact that Outlook does not exit correctly when running Spambayes and having a program/mailto link open the Compose Mail window. Yes I realize there have been 2 previous tickets about OUTLOOK.EXE closing, but none came to the conclusion that it's caused by a Compose Mail window. And both are closed without a solution. I have tested this on several computers and have tried multiple things to try to fix it (such as renaming extend.dat and other files) and nothing seems to work. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Comment By: Christian Blackburn (seier) Date: 2006-05-23 14:04 Message: Logged In: YES user_id=561770 Hi NyteTears, > It seems that the spam filter in outlook is causing it to >hang. I wasn't able to reproduce this in Outlook 2003, which is where the problem is at for most people. Perhaps you'd like to tell us what version you're using and the exact steps you took to resolve this. As far as I can tell the problem the rest of us are experiencing is indeed related to SpamBayes' plugin and not outlook itself, although I'm sure in the past with all those security updates the scenario you've described must have been true at least once. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Comment By: Nytetears (nytetears) Date: 2006-05-23 16:12 Message: Logged In: YES user_id=1369127 To be honest Outlook 2003 was fine for a bit after disabling the spam blocker and then it started with the refusing to shut down again. I finally gave up and paid $5 for an addin that makes sure the program is shut down (http://www.daveswebsite.com/software/olshutdown/ ). I truely do not believe it is SpamBayes causing the trouble as I have it without this program. I have found it often happens if I click on an email link in a browser when the program is not open. I do know I have had this problem for years and I don't use addons in my email as a general rule. Once I turned off the spam filter that came with outlook I never had the program hang once. I could not tell you why it does this or a fix for it beyond turning the option off but that is the cause of outlook remaining open in the task manager. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Comment By: Kip Cartwright (kcartwri) Date: 2005-03-29 16:26 Message: Logged In: YES user_id=192708 I have the same problem on Outlook 2003. For a start, if you don't want to put it in the Deleted Items folder, then delete the message, don't move it (this has nothing to do with SpamBayes, it's learning how to use Outlook). You should periodically review the spam folder anyway, in case of false positives. So you're already processing that folder. If you don't want to delete the messages in there yourself, then Outlook can do that for you (c.f. Well.I tried SpamBays on around 4 personal computers which are all on the same network. It does its job perfectly. Than i decided to try it on a laptop. This laptop uses outlook on the network to get its mails and spamBayes works fine too.But when the laptop joins internet through an other connection and receives the mails on the same mail box (same parameters) Spambayes prompts a window and offers to be turned off to let the mails in. After this, it looks "dead". I mean that you cant anymore activate it, the buttons on outlook are locked and the only thing i could do was to uninstall it. I supose some of you would say : which message apears in the prompt window ... i would like to know it too.The owner of this laptop didnt keep it anywhere, and as it is my chief i can't easily ask her to give some "tries" when she backs home. All of the sub level folders are inaccessible despite the fact that there is a "plus" box next to each top-level folder. Nothing I do allows me to see what's inside the top level and choose appropriately. Sorry to be so long-winded, but please somebody help me... ---------------------------------------------------------------------- >Comment By: SourceForge Robot (sf-robot) Date: 05/25/06 19:20 Message: Logged In: YES user_id=1312539 This Tracker item was closed automatically by the system. My guess is that even though you downloaded the source and ran addin.py you're still using the old version somehow. Perhaps the uninstall didn't complete? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Comment By: Tony Meyer (anadelonbrin) Date: 05/11/06 18:41 Message: Logged In: YES user_id=552329 If you are using Outlook, then we strongly recommend that you use the Outlook plug-in, and do not run from source. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- You can respond by visiting: https://sourceforge.net/tracker/?func=detail&atid=498103&aid=1486943&group_id=61702 From noreply at sourceforge.net Tue May 30 12:11:55 2006 From: noreply at sourceforge.net (SourceForge.net) Date: Tue, 30 May 2006 03:11:55 -0700 Subject: [spambayes-bugs] [ spambayes-Feature Requests-1497434 ] Outlook 2007 compabiltyt Message-ID: Feature Requests item #1497434, was opened at 2006-05-30 07:11 Message generated for change (Tracker Item Submitted) made by Item Submitter You can respond by visiting: https://sourceforge.net/tracker/?func=detail&atid=498106&aid=1497434&group_id=61702 Please note that this message will contain a full copy of the comment thread, including the initial issue submission, for this request, not just the latest update.
