It would be great if it could be presented both as numbers and graphically (impresses CEO's...). The means to print it as a hard copy would be just swell... ;o) ---------------------------------------------------------------------- >Comment By: Tony Meyer (anadelonbrin) Date: 2005-07-04 16:04 Message: Logged In: YES user_id=552329 >From the list: a request for more stats: In particular I think it could be interesting to add: 1 - total spam, good, false positive and false negative messages in a day for each day of a month 2 - total spam, good, false positive and false negative messages in a month for each month of a year 3 - total spam, good, false positive and false negative messages in a year (for all years spent using spambayes) 4 - mean values for the preceding points (not very mandatory because they could be calculated from the points above) ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Comment By: Tony Meyer (anadelonbrin) Date: 2004-12-08 16:38 Message: Logged In: YES user_id=552329 Another update: there is now a separate "Statistics" tab in the SpamBayes Manager, which makes way for more stats. The stats are now mostly the ones that the web interface offers, plus ones that can be used for JGC's batting average calculations. Thanks to Kenny Pitt! To summarise the rest of this tracker: there is still no graphical display, stats about the database itself, or stats about mail received per hour/day. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Comment By: Tony Meyer (anadelonbrin) Date: 2004-10-15 12:47 Message: Logged In: YES user_id=552329 As an update: I've checked in a change to CVS that makes the Outlook plug-in's statistics persistent across sessions, so it's now basically the same as sb_server/sb_imapfilter's stats. Graphics or more stats will have to wait for another day... ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Comment By: Josh Wand (joshwa) Date: 2004-06-27 12:07 Message: Logged In: YES user_id=7937 Have a look at the popfile statistics page for good ideas on how to present spam statistics. Totals and percentages for spam, non-spam, false-pos, false-neg, and summary and detail statistics on the corpus itself (which words are likliest to be in spam, ham, etc). Lovely html graphics, too. I'd love to see these features in spambayes. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Comment By: Murilo Pinto (mulpinsf) Date: 2004-05-28 01:50 Message: Logged In: YES user_id=378491 I'd like to have a tiny button in the Outlook toolbar showing how many spams(red)/ham(blue) SB processed in that session. Hovering the mouse at it would give % in the "pop- up" comment. If clicked, it could open a "page" with more detailed stats, as per hour/day/month/hour of the day/day of the week/accounts/year. Outstanding antispam, btw. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Comment By: Tony Meyer (anadelonbrin) Date: 2004-03-13 20:00 Message: Logged In: YES user_id=552329 Noting dupe in [ 915260 ] Statistics ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Comment By: Kenny Pitt (kpitt) Date: 2003-11-21 03:21 Message: Logged In: YES user_id=859086 The latest CVS plugin actually does include false positives and negatives in the statistics. The definition is this. If a message was classified as Ham and then reclassified by the user as Spam, it is a false negative. If a message was classified as Spam and then reclassified by the user as Ham, it is a false positive. A message that was originally classified as Unsure is never considered a false positive or negative. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Comment By: Erik Sargent (esargent) Date: 2003-11-20 22:34 Message: Logged In: YES user_id=586922 Quick note on the "impossibility" of tracking false pos/neg. Actually, since an incorrectly classified message already has a header inserted, then you would only flag a "false" if that header existed and was changed. This means you'd have to check for the existence of the header before you processed the Delete/Recover buttons, but it can be done. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Comment By: Tony Meyer (anadelonbrin) Date: 2003-09-30 16:19 Message: Logged In: YES user_id=552329 Note that the plug-in has basic stats information (cvs version) now, although it's still only on a per session basis (this will no doubt improve at some point). The web interface (for non-plugin users) also now (cvs head) has basic stats, which are persisted between sessions. Any opinions on which statistics would be best to add? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Comment By: Tony Meyer (anadelonbrin) Date: 2003-07-11 16:25 Message: Logged In: YES user_id=552329 It's not exactly what you have asked for, but as a start, are you aware that in the logs, each time you shut Outlook down it prints a message like: "SpamBayes processed 555 messages, finding 34 spam and 11 unsure" (So you could shut Outlook down each hour/day, to generate this message). It's unlikely that a graphical version would ever be made, but it would be easy enough to throw numbers like this into Excel and get pretty graphs. The number of false positives/negatives is more difficult because SpamBayes doesn't really have any way to know that mail is a fp/fn. It could print the number of times the "delete as spam" and "recover from spam" buttons are used, I guess, but this would include all unsure mail, which aren't exactly fp/fn's. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Comment By: Mark Jeays (dze27) Date: 2003-07-11 16:16 Message: Logged In: YES user_id=302748 I'm just another user but I think this would be a great addition. I'd also be interested in: number of false positives (along with percentage of total), number of false negatives (along with percentage of total) and percentage of mail received that is spam. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- You can respond by visiting: https://sourceforge.net/tracker/?func=detail&atid=498106&aid=765924&group_id=61702 From noreply at sourceforge.net Tue Jul 5 23:58:44 2005 From: noreply at sourceforge.net (SourceForge.net) Date: Tue, 05 Jul 2005 14:58:44 -0700 Subject: [spambayes-bugs] [ spambayes-Feature Requests-1233040 ] Graphic Hash score? Category: Outlook Group: None Status: Open Priority: 5 Submitted By: Paul Grunwald (pgrunwald) Assigned to: Mark Hammond (mhammond) Summary: Graphic Hash score? Initial Comment: I upgraded to the latest version and the majority of the spam that is getting through is a graphic that is an ad for perscription drugs. The bottom of the spam is a random word list to confuse the lexical scores. Would it be possible to develop another score that perhaps took a bit hash of the graphic in the spam and then looked for the same hash on subsequent messages? A more complicated solution would be to look for "similar" pictures but I would think this would be an order of magnitude more complicated than a simple hash or other calculation. Other things that could contribute to the score could be size, shape, color depth, percentage of white space or background color, etc. I know that it would be somewhat easy to put in a random bit in the graphic to cause a different hash but it would put a CPU tax on the spammers to randomize the graphics for every message. Just a thought, Paul ---------------------------------------------------------------------- You can respond by visiting: https://sourceforge.net/tracker/?func=detail&atid=498106&aid=1233040&group_id=61702 From noreply at sourceforge.net Wed Jul 6 05:13:34 2005 From: noreply at sourceforge.net (SourceForge.net) Date: Tue, 05 Jul 2005 20:13:34 -0700 Subject: [spambayes-bugs] [ spambayes-Patches-1233138 ] Unicode version of PyMeldLite Message-ID: Patches item #1233138, was opened at 2005-07-06 05:13 Message generated for change (Tracker Item Submitted) made by Item Submitter You can respond by visiting: https://sourceforge.net/tracker/?func=detail&atid=498105&aid=1233138&group_id=61702 Please note that this message will contain a full copy of the comment thread, including the initial issue submission, for this request, not just the latest update. I can't find my old log files or else I'd post them. I have been running SpamBayes after doing this "fix" for 2 days now and it appears to be working fine. If the problem resurfaces, I'll post a new tracker and reference this defect ID as well. In any event, here are the steps I took to fix/work-around the problem -- 1. Remove the toolbars from Outlook, then closed outlook. 2. I did a complete uninstall using the SpamBayes uninstall program (not Windows uninstall). 3. Manually deleted the C:\Program Files\SpamBayes folder and left over files. 4. Manually deleted the outcmd.dat file in the profile directories. 5. Manually deleted the SpamBayes folder in the profile directories. 6. Reinstalled SpamBayes 7. This seems to be related to, but not an exact duplicate of bug ID 964537. Email filtering seems to be working fine; however, if I click or nothing happnes. I originally had 1.0rc1 so I upgraded to 1.0rc2 hoping this would fix the problem. It didn't. Next I tried deleting the toolbar, per troubleshooting instructions -- right-click on toolbars, Customize, highlight spam-bayes, delete, close outlook, reopen outlook so toolbars would be recreated. This didn't help. Next I tried renaming outcmd.dat so outlook would reset all the toolbars and also tried deleting the toolbar after that, which did not work. The last thing I tried was retraining the DB with the rebuild entire DB option checked. I saw the message writing database, but it never changed after several minutes. I hit the close button and closed the SpamBayes Manager, but the toolbars still did not work. I have the logs prior to retraining the DB and after if you want me to send them (I do not see a place where I can attach them in this followup addition). I can also send the DB file if need be. After doing this there appears to be no change in the functioning of the program, meaning that it is still filtering spam although my guess is that it is somehow not doing it as effectively as it should becuase the number of spam msgs that are appearing in my inbox is significant (approx 20) as opposed to 3 or 4 when it was working flawlessly. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Comment By: Mark Hammond (mhammond) Date: 2003-10-31 05:59 Message: Logged In: YES user_id=14198 mhammond at users.sourceforge.net should be fine. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Comment By: William Hughes (w_hughes) Date: 2003-10-31 04:59 Message: Logged In: YES user_id=892918 I just learned that the max file size is 256K and this file is almost 1 meg zipped. The only solution I know of at the moment is to go to the "Training" tab, and do a complete re-train. If you could possibly attach a copy of your "default_bayes_database.db" before you do this, I would appreciate it - either mail it directly to me, or attach it here. However, that doesn't explain why you can't use the toolbars. The only reference to the toolbars is "Creating new SpamBayes toolbar to host our buttons", which is what we expect after clobbering outcmd.dat. Hopefully someone here will be able to assist. Spambayes has been monitoring my Outlook mailbox for quite some time and it has always worked like a charm. Upto about two weeks ago. Suddenly I needed to re-train the complete database every day, otherwise it will simply not process messages. Spambayes loads without problems and the toolbar itself works fine. It just does not process anything until I re-train the database. Downloading and installing the latest version has not resolved matters. I have also tried putting the configuration files in a local folder instead of the documents&settings-folder that is synchronised with server during logon and logoff. Hasn't helped either... What I have noticed in the logfile is that it says "NOTE: Skipping folder for this session - temporarily unavailable" four times in a row. I wonder if this is the reason for the problem, although I have no idea what is triggering that message. I'll look into this more tomorrow - particularly what might cause it to start working as you describe. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Comment By: fintan74 (fintan74) Date: 2005-04-22 10:29 Message: Logged In: YES user_id=1239541 Hi Tony, Thanks again for your time. I downloaded the file, unpacked it and tried running it. Unfortunately there is no such thing as an outlook.ini file on our system. What I do have in my spambayes-folder is an 'MS Exchange Server.ini' file, which I assume is the same file you are looking for. Our IT-guy confirms this is also the name of the file that holds my Outlook-settings. Running the executable on this ini-file does nothing in the DOS-shell however: no errors, but also no output. There is no logfile in the spambayes-folder or the bin-drectory of your executable. Am I looking in the wrong place, or could this different .ini-file be the reason for the problems in the first place? An additional bit of information: I found yesterday and today that Spambayes suddenly starts working if I first 'delete as spam' a message, then open the Spambayes Manager window and simply close it again. After a while the program suddenly jumps to life and starts classifying mail. Upon restart of the computer it is dormant again (it loads fine though) and I need to repeat the above steps to get it working. It's getting stranger by the day, but at least it's doing something... Look forward to hearing back from you... (I'm taking a stab at where the Outlook.ini file is, since it's not the default config layout. Replace with the location of the actual file). If you could try this with Outlook closed, and with Outlook open, and see if it generates the same error, that would be great. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Comment By: Tony Meyer (anadelonbrin) Date: 2005-04-21 09:18 Message: Logged In: YES user_id=552329 Ack - sorry. I believe you have my e-mail address, otherwise I'll be happy to mail it to you. I've tried installing the testversion you mention. It still gives the same message in the logfile: 'skipping folder for this session - temporarily unavailable'. It almost seems like Spambayes is starting up before Outlook has finished loading, or something... The interesting thing is that the new testversion does give an additional errormessage: 'Ignoring OnCommand for IDC_ACTION_HAM'. It also does not seem to complete the loop of saving the configuration and activating the Spambayes watch. I've copied the complete logfile below. Perhaps this helps also. Thanks again for your time. (2) I can wrap it up as a binary, so you don't need anything, and send this to you. It ends up being about 3Mb, though, because it grabs a whole heap of stuff. (Although if I just sent the executable, which is small, it might work if it was run in the bin directory in the spambayes installation). Does either of those sound ok? I've looked for information about these errors, and tried things here, but I can't think of any other way forward at the moment. This is fixed in CVS (so you can use the source from there if you like), and so will be fixed in 1.1a2, when we have time to release that. Otherwise, the solution is to use 1.0.4 until 1.1a2 is released. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- You can respond by visiting: https://sourceforge.net/tracker/?func=detail&atid=498103&aid=1235971&group_id=61702 From noreply at sourceforge.net Wed Jul 13 10:06:57 2005 From: noreply at sourceforge.net (SourceForge.net) Date: Wed, 13 Jul 2005 01:06:57 -0700 Subject: [spambayes-bugs] [ spambayes-Bugs-1237283 ] SB doesn't filter. Category: None Group: None Status: Open Priority: 5 Submitted By: Mark Storer (mstorer3772) Assigned to: Nobody/Anonymous (nobody) Summary: Counter-counter-spam filtering suggestions Initial Comment: My experience is that the majority of spam that gets around filteration involves lots of deliberate misspellings, either by add1ng or ins^ertin*g non-le++er ch at racters, thro wing in sp aces wher e t hey do n't belon g, or ByUsingTitleCaseToSeperateWordsRatherThanSpaces. Ditching spaces There are several possible workarounds to this: 1) Drop all non-letters and spaces, evaluating the resulting monolithic string. Downside: More compulationally expensive, as the list of possibly matches increases dramatically for each segment of the monolith, and you have to test each segment against multiple lengths. O(n^2) might be generous. 2) Attempt to merge adjacent tokens to see if they qualify as spam (or ham I suppose). This sounds more like a O(n) operation, but would only stamp out the "additional spaces" method. Downside: Again, more CPU time, but to a lesser extent than #1 Defeated by not using the "add spaces" technique. 3) Treat all new words as having a low positve spam rating of some sort. Each newly encountered misspelling would be initially biased towards spam. 4) Add a spelling checker. New misspelled words have a slightly-spam rating (outside training). Downside: Big data file tacked onto your otherwise light-weight plugin/app/thingy. One concern with #3 and #4 is how they would react to an email containing source code of whatever language. Variable and function names are infrequently found in a dictionary (as you're no doubt aware). ---------------------------------------------------------------------- You can respond by visiting: https://sourceforge.net/tracker/?func=detail&atid=498106&aid=1242708&group_id=61702 From noreply at sourceforge.net Fri Jul 22 18:02:27 2005 From: noreply at sourceforge.net (SourceForge.net) Date: Fri, 22 Jul 2005 09:02:27 -0700 Subject: [spambayes-bugs] [ spambayes-Bugs-1243175 ] Delete as spam button has no effect Message-ID: Bugs item #1243175, was opened at 2005-07-23 02:02 Message generated for change (Tracker Item Submitted) made by Item Submitter You can respond by visiting: https://sourceforge.net/tracker/?func=detail&atid=498103&aid=1243175&group_id=61702 Please note that this message will contain a full copy of the comment thread, including the initial issue submission, for this request, not just the latest update. After disabling and only disabling NX (remove /noexecute from boot.ini), it worked. Funny thing is that the owner of the company I work for developed a Bayesian spam filter as well and it had the same issue with the NX. Not sure what the problem is, but the NX feature would be nice to turn on. Does anyone know if NX can be disabled at the application level so that the other processes were protected with NX? It isn't obvious to me that is *is* the problem, but it certainly is possible. It would be interesting to know if the source version of SpamBayes has the same problem. When I get back to Aus, I will try and reproduce this. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Comment By: Paul Quinn (paulquinn) Date: 2004-07-21 01:04 Message: Logged In: YES user_id=815032 This is a problem with NX protection...this is how I got it to work: There are ways to disable NX at application level: a) Through the UI... i) "Control Panel" > "System" ii) Click on the "Advanced" tab iii) Under "Performance" section, click "Settings" iv) Click on the "Data Execution Prevention" tab v) Click "Add" and select the appication you want to disable NX for b) Registry... Under "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\AppCompatFlags\Layers" (there are equivalent HKEY_CURRENT_USER keys), create a new string key, its name being the full path to the executable file you want to disable NX for, the value being "DisableNXShowUI" ...you'll notice that in the UI, only executable files can be added. This means that I had to select the "Outlook.exe" file to get Spambayes to work again. I tried adding the spambayes_addin.dll and the python23.dll paths to the registry as a workaround, but this didn't work... Also, if you are using Outlook 2003, you may need to re-enable the plug-in by deleting its resilliency key (the COM Add-in Manager won't remember the re-enable setting no matter how many times you try): http://groups.google.co.uk/groups? hl=en&lr=&ie=UTF-8&safe=off&selm=uZ%24FJzyFEHA.3984% 40TK2MSFTNGP10.phx.gbl FYI, the same techniques work with Inboxer etc. I'm guessing, as tim_one said, it's to do with the Python libraries. SpamBayes is written entirely in the Python programming language, and that never, ever tries to execute code from a data region (I'm very familiar with Python's implementation) My only guess is that Outlook itself, or MAPI, try to do this when interfacing with extensions. Or Mark Hammond is playing disgusting games (the only kind he knows, really ) in the win32all Python extensions. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- You can respond by visiting: https://sourceforge.net/tracker/?func=detail&atid=498103&aid=988095&group_id=61702 From noreply at sourceforge.net Sat Jul 23 22:21:04 2005 From: noreply at sourceforge.net (SourceForge.net) Date: Sat, 23 Jul 2005 13:21:04 -0700 Subject: [spambayes-bugs] [ spambayes-Bugs-966487 ] uncaptured python exception ... object has no attribute 'isC Message-ID: Bugs item #966487, was opened at 2004-06-04 07:51 Message generated for change (Comment added) made by marekz You can respond by visiting: https://sourceforge.net/tracker/?func=detail&atid=498103&aid=966487&group_id=61702 Please note that this message will contain a full copy of the comment thread, including the initial issue submission, for this request, not just the latest update. Category: None Group: None >Status: Pending Priority: 5 Submitted By: Mark Storer (mstorer3772) Assigned to: Nobody/Anonymous (nobody) Summary: Counter-counter-spam filtering suggestions Initial Comment: My experience is that the majority of spam that gets around filteration involves lots of deliberate misspellings, either by add1ng or ins^ertin*g non-le++er ch at racters, thro wing in sp aces wher e t hey do n't belon g, or ByUsingTitleCaseToSeperateWordsRatherThanSpaces. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- >Comment By: Tony Meyer (anadelonbrin) Date: 2005-07-25 13:34 Message: Logged In: YES user_id=552329 Something like #2 (but better) is done by the use_bigrams option. This is an experimental option in 1.0.x, and a regular option in 1.1.x. You can enable it and see how you like it. You can change the value an unknown token is assigned. This is the unknown_word_prob option. Experimental testing indicated that the current value of 0.5 gives the best results. Various testing has been done with spell checking/adding tokens for words not in a dictionary. None have shown any improvement. I don't understand what you mean by #1. If you drop all spaces, you are left with one token per email body. This will only match for indentical mail - that will certainly not help. Or are you planning on splitting up the token somehow? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- You can respond by visiting: https://sourceforge.net/tracker/?func=detail&atid=498106&aid=1242708&group_id=61702 From noreply at sourceforge.net Mon Jul 25 03:35:55 2005 From: noreply at sourceforge.net (SourceForge.net) Date: Sun, 24 Jul 2005 18:35:55 -0700 Subject: [spambayes-bugs] [ spambayes-Bugs-1240942 ] Attachments are corrupted Message-ID: Bugs item #1240942, was opened at 2005-07-20 03:57 Message generated for change (Comment added) made by anadelonbrin You can respond by visiting: https://sourceforge.net/tracker/?func=detail&atid=498103&aid=1240942&group_id=61702 Please note that this message will contain a full copy of the comment thread, including the initial issue submission, for this request, not just the latest update. These errors appear in error log, can you guys help? error: uncaptured python exception, closing channel (socket.error: (10035, 'The socket operation could not complete without blocking') [asynchat.pyc|handle_read|88] [asyncore.pyc|recv|356]) error: uncaptured python exception, closing channel (socket.error: (10035, 'The socket operation could not complete without blocking') [asynchat.pyc|handle_read|88] [asyncore.pyc|recv|356]) error: uncaptured python exception, closing channel (socket.error: (10035, 'The socket operation could not complete without blocking') [asynchat.pyc|handle_read|88] [asyncore.pyc|recv|356]) ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Comment By: SourceForge Robot (sf-robot) Date: 2005-07-26 14:00 Message: Logged In: YES user_id=1312539 This Tracker item was closed automatically by the system. I don't even think it's reaching the POP server so the file size makes no difference. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Comment By: Tony Meyer (anadelonbrin) Date: 2005-07-11 18:21 Message: Logged In: YES user_id=552329 When it happens, is there a really large email on the server? What version of SpamBayes is this? There's a configurable timeout in 1.1 (but you shouldn't use 1.1a1's sb_server), which might help with this problem. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- You can respond by visiting: https://sourceforge.net/tracker/?func=detail&atid=498104&aid=1235058&group_id=61702 From noreply at sourceforge.net Tue Jul 26 06:29:28 2005 From: noreply at sourceforge.net (SourceForge.net) Date: Mon, 25 Jul 2005 21:29:28 -0700 Subject: [spambayes-bugs] [ spambayes-Feature Requests-1244939 ] Scanning attachments Message-ID: Feature Requests item #1244939, was opened at 2005-07-26 09:59 Message generated for change (Tracker Item Submitted) made by Item Submitter You can respond by visiting: https://sourceforge.net/tracker/?func=detail&atid=498106&aid=1244939&group_id=61702 Please note that this message will contain a full copy of the comment thread, including the initial issue submission, for this request, not just the latest update. Category: Outlook Group: Next Release (example) Status: Open Priority: 5 Submitted By: Altu (altufaltu_sf) Assigned to: Mark Hammond (mhammond) Summary: Scanning attachments Initial Comment: I'm using Outlook plugin with Exchange server (both 2003). It seems that Spambayes requires whole message to be downloaded, including attachments. This causes problems when connected through a dial-up connection. Without Spambayes installed, Outlook downloads only headers / message body. Attachments are downloaded only when accessed. With Spambayes installed, it makes Outlook download all attachments too. Since attachments are generally encoded (MIME/base64?) or are not in text form (.pdf,...), I don't know if scanning attachments helps. Please provide an option not to scan / download attachments. Otherwise, the software is great! The things I'd suggest without seeing the logs are (in order): 1. Check to see if SpamBayes is disabled (Help->About Microsoft Outlook->Disabled Items). 2. Run the "Inbox Repair Wizard" (scanpst.exe) over any "Personal Folders" (.pst) files that Outlook has open. 3. Run Outlook's "Detect and Repair" (particularly since Outlook is also unstable). ---------------------------------------------------------------------- You can respond by visiting: https://sourceforge.net/tracker/?func=detail&atid=498103&aid=1237283&group_id=61702
