Category: None Group: None >Status: Closed Priority: 5 Submitted By: Mark Storer (mstorer3772) Assigned to: Nobody/Anonymous (nobody) Summary: Counter-counter-spam filtering suggestions Initial Comment: My experience is that the majority of spam that gets around filteration involves lots of deliberate misspellings, either by add1ng or ins^ertin*g non-le++er ch at racters, thro wing in sp aces wher e t hey do n't belon g, or ByUsingTitleCaseToSeperateWordsRatherThanSpaces. Ditching spaces There are several possible workarounds to this: 1) Drop all non-letters and spaces, evaluating the resulting monolithic string. Downside: More compulationally expensive, as the list of possibly matches increases dramatically for each segment of the monolith, and you have to test each segment against multiple lengths. O(n^2) might be generous. 2) Attempt to merge adjacent tokens to see if they qualify as spam (or ham I suppose). This sounds more like a O(n) operation, but would only stamp out the "additional spaces" method. Downside: Again, more CPU time, but to a lesser extent than #1 Defeated by not using the "add spaces" technique. 3) Treat all new words as having a low positve spam rating of some sort. Each newly encountered misspelling would be initially biased towards spam. 4) Add a spelling checker. New misspelled words have a slightly-spam rating (outside training). Downside: Big data file tacked onto your otherwise light-weight plugin/app/thingy. One concern with #3 and #4 is how they would react to an email containing source code of whatever language. Variable and function names are infrequently found in a dictionary (as you're no doubt aware). ---------------------------------------------------------------------- >Comment By: SourceForge Robot (sf-robot) Date: 08/07/05 19:00 Message: Logged In: YES user_id=1312539 This Tracker item was closed automatically by the system. This is an experimental option in 1.0.x, and a regular option in 1.1.x. You can enable it and see how you like it. You can change the value an unknown token is assigned. This is the unknown_word_prob option. Experimental testing indicated that the current value of 0.5 gives the best results. Various testing has been done with spell checking/adding tokens for words not in a dictionary. None have shown any improvement. I don't understand what you mean by #1. If you drop all spaces, you are left with one token per email body. This will only match for indentical mail - that will certainly not help. Or are you planning on splitting up the token somehow? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- You can respond by visiting: https://sourceforge.net/tracker/?func=detail&atid=498106&aid=1242708&group_id=61702 From noreply at sourceforge.net Mon Aug 8 04:00:15 2005 From: noreply at sourceforge.net (SourceForge.net) Date: Sun, 7 Aug 2005 19:00:15 -0700 Subject: [spambayes-bugs] [ spambayes-Bugs-1243175 ] Delete as spam button has no effect Message-ID: <200508080200.j7820FNl019361@projects.sourceforge.net> Bugs item #1243175, was opened at 07/22/05 09:02 Message generated for change (Comment added) made by sf-robot You can respond by visiting: https://sourceforge.net/tracker/?func=detail&atid=498103&aid=1243175&group_id=61702 Please note that this message will contain a full copy of the comment thread, including the initial issue submission, for this request, not just the latest update. Certainly SpamBayes does nothing special with distutils, just a standard pure-python install. You could try installing some other Python package to see if the problem is specific to SpamBayes or not. To copy files manually, use the "cp" command (see "man cp" for details). You need the spambayes package directory (the one that has "__init__.py" in it) somewhere that Python will find it. Running "python -c "import sys;print sys.path" will print out a list of the places Python will look for the directory. You can also set the environment "PYTHONPATH" to include paths to add to the places Python looks for packages/modules. (See "man export" for detailed help). Something like "export PYTHONPATH=$PYTHONPATH:~/spambayes/spambayes". ---------------------------------------------------------------------- You can respond by visiting: https://sourceforge.net/tracker/?func=detail&atid=498104&aid=1255409&group_id=61702 From noreply at sourceforge.net Wed Aug 10 07:31:38 2005 From: noreply at sourceforge.net (SourceForge.net) Date: Tue, 09 Aug 2005 22:31:38 -0700 Subject: [spambayes-bugs] [ spambayes-Bugs-988095 ] Athlon64, SP2, NX (no execute)=no workee Message-ID: Bugs item #988095, was opened at 2004-07-10 03:00 Message generated for change (Comment added) made by mhammond You can respond by visiting: https://sourceforge.net/tracker/?func=detail&atid=498103&aid=988095&group_id=61702 Please note that this message will contain a full copy of the comment thread, including the initial issue submission, for this request, not just the latest update. It isn't obvious to me that is *is* the problem, but it certainly is possible. It would be interesting to know if the source version of SpamBayes has the same problem. When I get back to Aus, I will try and reproduce this. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Comment By: Paul Quinn (paulquinn) Date: 2004-07-21 01:04 Message: Logged In: YES user_id=815032 This is a problem with NX protection...this is how I got it to work: There are ways to disable NX at application level: a) Through the UI... i) "Control Panel" > "System" ii) Click on the "Advanced" tab iii) Under "Performance" section, click "Settings" iv) Click on the "Data Execution Prevention" tab v) Click "Add" and select the appication you want to disable NX for b) Registry... Under "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\AppCompatFlags\Layers" (there are equivalent HKEY_CURRENT_USER keys), create a new string key, its name being the full path to the executable file you want to disable NX for, the value being "DisableNXShowUI" ...you'll notice that in the UI, only executable files can be added. This means that I had to select the "Outlook.exe" file to get Spambayes to work again. I tried adding the spambayes_addin.dll and the python23.dll paths to the registry as a workaround, but this didn't work... Also, if you are using Outlook 2003, you may need to re-enable the plug-in by deleting its resilliency key (the COM Add-in Manager won't remember the re-enable setting no matter how many times you try): http://groups.google.co.uk/groups? hl=en&lr=&ie=UTF-8&safe=off&selm=uZ%24FJzyFEHA.3984% 40TK2MSFTNGP10.phx.gbl FYI, the same techniques work with Inboxer etc. I'm guessing, as tim_one said, it's to do with the Python libraries. SpamBayes is written entirely in the Python programming language, and that never, ever tries to execute code from a data region (I'm very familiar with Python's implementation) My only guess is that Outlook itself, or MAPI, try to do this when interfacing with extensions. Or Mark Hammond is playing disgusting games (the only kind he knows, really ) in the win32all Python extensions. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- You can respond by visiting: https://sourceforge.net/tracker/?func=detail&atid=498103&aid=988095&group_id=61702 From noreply at sourceforge.net Mon Aug 15 16:50:02 2005 From: noreply at sourceforge.net (SourceForge.net) Date: Mon, 15 Aug 2005 07:50:02 -0700 Subject: [spambayes-bugs] [ spambayes-Bugs-1221946 ] Dublicates created with activesync Message-ID: Bugs item #1221946, was opened at 2005-06-16 14:13 Message generated for change (Comment added) made by kprawel You can respond by visiting: https://sourceforge.net/tracker/?func=detail&atid=498103&aid=1221946&group_id=61702 Please note that this message will contain a full copy of the comment thread, including the initial issue submission, for this request, not just the latest update. When it doesn't work, I'm stuck. The idea of the software looks fabulous. I'm willing to slog through an put everything in some useable directory, if you'll explain what the script does- or you could fix the script to work on more *nix systems. Other people have had the same problem (see below). What's needed is a clear explanation of how to set up without using the script, or a foolproof script. (When engineers make things more foolproof, God invents better fools.) Here's my setup: AMD K6-2 at 533, 392 mb Mepis3.3.1 hd install Python 2.3.5 Distutils are installed. I'm a complete LInux newbie. Same error in 1.1.a1 and 1.0.4, and on this page http://mail.python.org/pipermail/spambayes/2005-July/017645.html He's using Mandrake. and here: http://mail.python.org/pipermail/spambayes/2005-May/017045.html > I'm trying to install spambayes 1.0.4 in a *nix account, and there seems to be a reasonable installation of python 2.3 on the machine. Nonetheless, after unzipping and de-tarring the source code, I get the following error: > % python setup.py install > running install > error: invalid Python installation: unable to open > /usr/lib/python2.3/config/Makefile (No such file or directory) Comment on prior response below- FWIW, I HAVE Distutils installed, and it still doesn't work. My impression-just from using lots of software, that is, as a user- is that it's a problem in PYTHON. That is, there's no consistent way to let the OS know where python keeps things, so there's no way to write scripts that always work. Or the script is calling a 'makefile' program that's been replaced. Prior response I believe (Googling seems to back this up) that this means that you need to install the python-devel (or however your system spells it) package to use distutils. (You can use SpamBayes without running setup.py, of course - just manually put the spambayes package directory on the PYTHONPATH, and run the scripts from wherever you like). HOW? "Can I just copy the required files manually? If so, what files (or directories) are needed to use spambayes with procmail (Kmail)?" I don't know how to set or find the 'PYTHONPATH' to install spambayes myself- if someone does, would you please explain it? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- >Comment By: SourceForge Robot (sf-robot) Date: 08/24/05 19:20 Message: Logged In: YES user_id=1312539 This Tracker item was closed automatically by the system. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- You can respond by visiting: https://sourceforge.net/tracker/?func=detail&atid=498104&aid=1255409&group_id=61702 From noreply at sourceforge.net Thu Aug 25 10:03:36 2005 From: noreply at sourceforge.net (SourceForge.net) Date: Thu, 25 Aug 2005 01:03:36 -0700 Subject: [spambayes-bugs] [ spambayes-Support Requests-1268123 ] resetting outlook toolbar Message-ID: Support Requests item #1268123, was opened at 2005-08-24 13:04 Message generated for change (Settings changed) made by fraxinus You can respond by visiting: https://sourceforge.net/tracker/?func=detail&atid=498104&aid=1268123&group_id=61702 Please note that this message will contain a full copy of the comment thread, including the initial issue submission, for this request, not just the latest update. You may like to try this option when you can, to see if it has any effect on this bug. You can try it immediately if you use CVS, or as soon as the next release is made. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- You can respond by visiting: https://sourceforge.net/tracker/?func=detail&atid=498103&aid=773364&group_id=61702 From noreply at sourceforge.net Mon Aug 29 05:04:18 2005 From: noreply at sourceforge.net (SourceForge.net) Date: Sun, 28 Aug 2005 20:04:18 -0700 Subject: [spambayes-bugs] [ spambayes-Support Requests-1275261 ] Delete Mails on server (again) Message-ID: Support Requests item #1275261, was opened at 2005-08-29 07:36 Message generated for change (Settings changed) made by anadelonbrin You can respond by visiting: https://sourceforge.net/tracker/?func=detail&atid=498104&aid=1275261&group_id=61702 Please note that this message will contain a full copy of the comment thread, including the initial issue submission, for this request, not just the latest update. See Bug Report under: http://sourceforge.net/tracker/index.php?func=detail&aid=773364&group_id=61702&atid=498103 because of that I placed the save_spam_info:False line into my configuration, according to the docu, but it doesn't help. my Configuration/ Version SpamBayes 1.1a1 (April 2005) Outlook2000 Problem, with this version, Mails are still not deleted on the server. It is definately a spambayes problem. If I turn SB of, and delete mails, they are deleted on the server, as expected. So far I had to delete them manually which is really annoying with 40+ spam mails a day. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- >Comment By: Tony Meyer (anadelonbrin) Date: 2005-08-29 15:04 Message: Logged In: YES user_id=552329 Dupe of: [ 773364 ] "Delete From Server" doesn't work on filtered mail http://sourceforge.net/tracker/index.php?func=detail&aid=773364&group_id=61702&atid=498103 (The comments of which already note that this does not work as a fix). ---------------------------------------------------------------------- You can respond by visiting: https://sourceforge.net/tracker/?func=detail&atid=498104&aid=1275261&group_id=61702 From noreply at sourceforge.net Mon Aug 29 11:36:10 2005 From: noreply at sourceforge.net (SourceForge.net) Date: Mon, 29 Aug 2005 02:36:10 -0700 Subject: [spambayes-bugs] [ spambayes-Support Requests-1275261 ] Delete Mails on server (again) Message-ID: Support Requests item #1275261, was opened at 2005-08-28 21:36 Message generated for change (Comment added) made by janbro You can respond by visiting: https://sourceforge.net/tracker/?func=detail&atid=498104&aid=1275261&group_id=61702 Please note that this message will contain a full copy of the comment thread, including the initial issue submission, for this request, not just the latest update. That means that we are aware of the problem, and no-one has found a solution yet. It's difficult to know what is causing this, because it's not clear what Outlook uses to determine which messages to delete from the server. It's possible that this is in fact and Outlook bug; it's further possible that there is nothing SpamBayes can do to avoid it. IAC, the bug report is still open, so when someone has time they will look at this. Until then (note that you can choose to monitor the bug via the sf system, which will let you know when the status changes), unfortunately, you'll have to either work around the problem or use a different filter. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Comment By: janbro (janbro) Date: 2005-08-29 21:36 Message: Logged In: YES user_id=1273798 so that leaves me with what?
