You'll need an svn client - grab one from http://subversion.tigris.org/project_packages.html Unless you have a setup that allows you to compile portaudio, you'll probably want to also grab the shtoom 0.2 installer, and grab fastaudio.pyd and libsndfile.dll from that as well. There's been a bunch of sanity added to the registration refresh, but I was still seeing very strange behaviour on some occasions. In frustration, I tried installing Twisted 2.0 and making shtoom use that, and lo and behold, the problems went away. I'm wondering if there wasn't some strange bug with the gtk2reactor in Twisted 1.3 (I was only able to get failures when using gtk2reactor). I'm strongly considering making Twisted 2.0 the minimum required version for shtoom, but would welcome comments. Anthony -- Anthony Baxter It's never too late to have a happy childhood. Sadly, neither Ubuntu nor Debian has Twisted 2.0 yet. I've been speaking with the maintainer about including 2.0 in Ubuntu's Breezy development branch, which would make it available for the next release in October. Hoary users would have to stick with snapshots of SVN made before the 2.0 requirement. It's good news that this problem has a fix, though. -- Dafydd From prz at mit.edu Sun May 22 14:42:45 2005 From: prz at mit.edu (Philip Zimmermann) Date: Sun, 22 May 2005 05:42:45 -0700 Subject: [Shtoom] audio corruption and twisted required versions In-Reply-To: <20050522120951.GZ32673@muse.19inch.net> References: <200505222151.41651.anthony@interlink.com.au> <20050522120951.GZ32673@muse.19inch.net> Message-ID: <5a6276ed3f7b801d868c050aea5b9fcb@mit.edu> I suggest that two Linux distributions (out of many others) not hold up a fix for a shtoom problem. Any shtoom problem. The other platforms > will need all the fixes they can get. Especially Windows and Mac. Given that Twisted 2.0 is two months old, I expect there are many Linux distributions which haven't released with it yet, which makes it difficult for users of those distributions to enjoy Shtoom. I didn't want to imply "don't depend on 2.0", only to say "this is one of the disadvantages of depending on 2.0". -- Dafydd From anthony at interlink.com.au Sun May 22 16:32:05 2005 From: anthony at interlink.com.au (Anthony Baxter) Date: Mon, 23 May 2005 00:32:05 +1000 Subject: [Shtoom] audio corruption and twisted required versions In-Reply-To: <20050522120951.GZ32673@muse.19inch.net> References: <200505222151.41651.anthony@interlink.com.au> <20050522120951.GZ32673@muse.19inch.net> Message-ID: <200505230032.08029.anthony@interlink.com.au> On Sunday 22 May 2005 22:09, Dafydd Harries wrote: > Sadly, neither Ubuntu nor Debian has Twisted 2.0 yet. This is a problem, yes. The approach I've taken on my boxes is to install twisted 2.0 to a different location and then added it to the PYTHONPATH. Particularly with dash's new SIP code landing soon (well, that's the plan, anyway), older versions of shtoom will rapidly become extremely unsupported. Note, though, that I'm not planning to make changes to stop shtoom working with 1.3, just that I'm planning to recommend it. I've changed the setup.py to now bitch if < 2.0 is installed, but this can be easily subverted by commenting out that check to cut a release that's based on 1.3. > It's good news that this problem has a fix, though. I _think_ it's a fix. I was able to get the problem to happen with 1.3, but in the process of trying to diagnose it further kept tripping over other 1.3 related issues that seemed to be because of 1.3's gtk2reactor being buggy. I've been unable to get it to happen again under 2.0, even with the register refresh turned down to 20s. Anthony -- Anthony Baxter It's never too late to have a happy childhood.
