Very good - so this allows for a work-around.
Still this is not really satisfactory-  however
I fear that it will be really tricky to find
the bug in the debian gcc 3.3.1 (also I am not
sure how crucial this "prerelease" tag is).

Would  a small unit test for general_function
be useful ?
