the CVS version works as per your reply 
you may know it returns

to interactive session and

to a variable under python 2.2.2 I'm assuming this is 'noise'

I had tried the non CVS 0.2.3  version after the CVS attempt, but it behaved
much the same and put it down to inadequate replacement of the CVS variant
since I had installed all of scipy and just replaced weave.
