Thanks to all of you for your suggestions. I get the mailing list in digest
mode, which is why I had had no response - not enough volume. Looks like my
last message kicked it over the limit.
Anyway, I'm now happily SciPy-ing. My first task (once I get familiar with
SciPy) will be to add this kind of help to the installation instructions! :)

P.S. As a one-time FORTRAN programmer, it's kind of twilight-zonish to see
odeint() and friends in Python ;)
