The petsc4py docs are effectively nonexistent, although the examples are not bad. When I was working on a FiPy-PETSc interface (not quite there, yet) I spent a lot of time in the petsc4py code to figure out what it was actually doing and what it was calling in PETSc-proper (not that I know that interface, either, but it's at least documented).
