I have some more concise instructions for the impatient. Recently
verified (3 days ago). LAX to Caltech:

Flyaway bus to Union Station ($7). Get on in the "green zone" in the
arrival level. Pay when you get off.

Gold line to Pasadena (Fillmore, Del Mar, or Lake Station are all
roughly similar distance to Caltech -- probably a 15-20 minute walk).

Optionally, one could take bus 177 from the Del Mar station to Caltech.
(I don't know that price.)
