No expertise here, I don't know this code. Can you give me the 
configuration step of building scipy. To avoidhaving long logs, pasting 
only python setup.py config output in scipy/sparse/linalg.dsolve/umfpack 
may be enough.

I would not be surprised if distutils thinks you have umfpack, but 
actually, you have not.
