I suspect *new* users will
- be no more confused than by a version change
- be more likely to find numpy because they are more likely 
  to have heard of it
- are more likely to understand from the name what it is

Some old Numeric users might be momentarily confused, but 
I doubt this is significant.

A Google search on numpy suggests the current status of 
things ... which favors numpy IMO.
