I had a similar problem reading MSC/MARC files. This lead to the creation of
FEval, a library for reading and writing Finite Element data (input and / or
output) in different formats. Although Nastran is not supported ATM, it is
very simple to add the corresponding functionality. If you need assistance I
am glad to help.

FEval can be found at http://www.sourceforge.net/projects/feval (no home page
as of now, the documentation is included in the distribution).
