That is what I suspected also. I haven't had time to chase this one further though. The only things slightly unusual about the build are that I built and linked readline and ncurses myself because the system doesn't have those. These were build with gcc. The Python build was built with MIPSPro. I wouldn't have thought readline/ncurses would cause this sort of problem. eric From tinu at email.ch Tue Jul 9 12:00:38 2002 From: tinu at email.ch (tinu) Date: 09 Jul 2002 18:00:38 +0200 Subject: [SciPy-dev] [ERR] build problems with fastumath Message-ID: Dear scipy gurus When compiling scipy (SciPy-0.2.0_alpha_103.3602), I get the following error: gcc -DNDEBUG -g -O3 -Wall -Wstrict-prototypes -fPIC -I/usr/local/include/python2.2 -c /home/tinu/download/SciPy-0.2.0_alpha_103.3602/scipy_base/fastumathmodule.c -o build/temp.linux-i686-2.2/fastumathmodule.o /home/tinu/download/SciPy-0.2.0_alpha_103.3602/scipy_base/fastumathmodule.c:27: fastumath_nounsigned.inc: No such file or directory error: command 'gcc' failed with exit status 1 Indeed no file named fastumath_nounsigned.inc exists in the distribution. It's pretty dirt simple in terms of features and will be used for text rendering in Chaco. This release works pretty well in my tests. Notes and downloads are available here: http://www.scipy.org/site_content/freetype Also, you can get it from the CVS by checking out either 'chaco' or 'freetype'. The freetype extension is created with weave, but you don't have to have weave to build it -- I've bundled all the files in the source distribution. >From here we need to improve its speed and auto-detection of system fonts/settings. The rendering quality could also use some help. So, this is a request for help -- especially on Unix platforms. If you have experience with fonts on Unix please help get the system font detection in order. I've only tested on Windows, but I have built/imported it on Linux so you should be able to try things out there without much trouble. Anyone with Freetype experience is invited to improve the rendering quality and add outline caching to improve speed. By the way. Lets keep discussion on scipy-dev at scipy.org for now instead of scipy-chaco. We're not up to the traffic level yet to justify the separate list. Also, weave only works if you have a C++ compiler installed (MSVC++ or gcc). Without one of these, there is no way for weave to compile the code. No, this is the scipy-dev list. Go ahead and post your question and I'm sure in due time someone will be able to assist you. A couple of things: 1- in your c.l.p post you gave very few details, in particular no traceback. In general when posting abouta problem like this, include the specific traceback and error messages. They take the guesswork out of the equation. Instead of saying '... it appears that...', simply _paste_ straight from a terminal the specific error output. To a developer who knows the code, that's typically key information which can quickly point to the source of the problem. 2- Technically your question is more appropriate for scipy-user than scipy-dev, as scipy-dev is meant to discuss issues with sicpy development. But the traffic on these is low enough that it shouldn't be a big deal. Just a comment for future reference. Cheers, f. Sorry I had know idea there is such thing as traceback. Is what gets write to the Python window? > Instead of saying '... it appears that...', simply _paste_ straight from a > terminal the specific error output. I don't know how to cut and paste from certain windows applications. (i.e. cmd.exe and python.exe ). I don't think one can. Geez I love Microsoft operating systems ;) > 2- Technically your question is more appropriate for scipy-user than > scipy-dev, as scipy-dev is meant to discuss issues with sicpy > development. I posted to those list and all ever got as a response was coyotes howls and tumble weeds. Oh well bet that weave is too young to handle complex classes or data types anyways. Thanks for all your help. Wish me luck. __________________________________________________________________ Your favorite stores, helpful shopping tools and great gift ideas. Yes, when there's an error (an exception in python lingo) python prints out a lot of details about what happened. Those details are critical for debugging the problem. > > Instead of saying '... it appears that...', simply _paste_ straight from a > > terminal the specific error output. Geez I love Microsoft operating systems ;) Mmmh, I'm pretty sure you can. I don't remember the details (rarely use windows) but I know it's possible to cut/paste from a command window. Not as nice as in unix, but possible. > > 2- Technically your question is more appropriate for scipy-user than > > scipy-dev, as scipy-dev is meant to discuss issues with sicpy > development. Strange, I never saw your post there and I've been on the list for a while. > Oh well bet that weave is too young to handle complex > classes or data types anyways. It depends on what you need. For numerical work it's fantastic. Just yesterday on scipy-user Eric Jones (weave's developer) gave me an example on how to access the raw data of a Numeric array through weave. After some more discussion I posted his example (useful) at: http://windom.colorado.edu/~fperez/python/python-c/ along with many other examples I've been collecting on how to use weave. For wrapping large libraries, there's always Swig and Boost.Python. And I'd suggest dropping the condescending tone. Weave and scipy are very impressive pieces of work, put out there for free by bright, talented people. If you know of a specific limitation, document it properly and it may be addressed (if it falls within the problem domain of weave/scipy). That kind of off-the-cuff comment ("I bet it can't handle complex...") isn't going to get you very far when asking for help from the very people who wrote it. Take it as friendly advice for the future. Those guys are good and extremely helpful in general, I've experienced their dedication first hand. Regards, f.
