It puts IDLE, BuildApplet, and the other applications that ship with  
MacPython in Applications.  This is not unusual.

It DOES install as a framework.

It DOES by default put symlinks in /usr/local/bin.

The slight differences in the way ActivePython behaves are deviations  
on their part.
