Try and run pimp (the engine underlying Package Manager) from the  
command line, and see whether that gives more information. Pimp is in  
/System/Library/Frameworks/Python.framework/Versions/Current/Lib/plat- 
mac/pimp.py.

Running it without any arguments will print the help message.
