FYI - I had actually just found a work-around. There happens to be a handy 
little program in /usr/bin called uuidgen, which does basically the same 
thing. I wrote a wrapper and called it with popen and it worked as a 
suitable replacement!

But, good to know the setup.py trick for real code. Cheers!
