I don't remember anymore. I think this was the suggested idiom
at the time I wrote the module. Hmm, maybe I even inherited this
from Guido.... I really don't remember.
But I've checked in a fix (albeit a different one than yours): I
now explicitly look for 'errn' as I do for '----'. This seems to
work. The fix is going to be in 2.2.2 too.
