[Pythonmac-SIG] arch i386 setting for LDFLAGS on Jaguar built-in Python?

For some reason, the LDFLAGS setting in 
/usr/lib/python2.2/config/Makefile on OS X 10.2 has the value:
-arch i386 -arch ppc

When compiling 4Suite (and probably other modules) this gives lots of 
error messages.
Does anyone have an idea why this was done? It doesn't seem to make 
sense.
