I haven't experimented with fink, but I got the Grass CD, which also
installs X, and tried launching the GUI version of Grass (which is TK-based)
and it worked surprisingly well. I haven't had time to play with it very
much (mostly just curious, no good reason to be looking at it), so I can't
really comment further.
