Subject: [PythonCE] Amateur programmer for pocket PC Python
Message-ID: <6295A8337804D6118DBB00508BAC749C2CF27B@email-server.forsheda.co.uk>
As a rank beginner I have written programs for Python and Tkinter but am
struggling with my Pocket PC. Can anyone send me a simple application to
run with that will accept a number and print another so that I can look at
the structure and start to make my own?
Thanks if you can

Hello,
I'm new to this list and it doesn't seem over-active. Perhaps that's a
good thing.
Is this list distinct from the Python for PocketPC project ?
If not - is that project still alive ?
I am learning python and coding *on* my PDA....... then testing on my
desktop. I currently only have an SH3 Jornada 525 (and lovely it is too)
- but will soon be upgrading to a DELL Axim - and so hopefully will be
able to develop scripts that I can run on the PDA... providing both an
IDE on the PDA and scripts for use on the PDA.
Thanks

Same list, same project still alive.
I'm redoing the port right now with Python 2.3 I don't have a specific timetable, but
chipping away at it.
Everything compiles, but it doesn't link. Just grunge work to get it going :-(

Great............ is it going to be an ARM only port or will you do versions
for the older processors ?
All new PDAs have ARM I guess.... but then the majority are still older processors..........
the Jornada 520 series was very popular :-)
Thanks for the reply

I thought I'd try CEF, which theoretically is cross platform. I've never tried it. I have an
ARM iPaq so ARM too.
I really want ctypes to port over, but I don't think that will be easy.

Subject: [PythonCE] PocketPC Python
Message-ID: <3F17B1EC.2000808@tbsmerchants.co.uk>
Is this the *best* forum for discussion relating specifically to the
PocketPC distribution of Python ?
I assume it is as the page at Mukworks that I downloaded the
distribution from points to here ! I'm just surprised its quiet :-)
Anyway - a big thanks to Brad and any other develoeprs of Python for the
PocketPC. I installed it yesterday and my text parsing scripts worked
*without modification* cool. Now I've got my head around file paths I'm
flying. Ok, so I'm a newbie and my scripts are hardly a rigorous test -
but even so its great to be able to test and develop the same scripts on
both platforms (desktop windows and pocketPC). A big thank you.
First a question (ok so I could just *try it* :-).
Will it work with the 'program files' on the storage card ? That would
save me 8meg of onboard memory.
And a couple of critiscms - not about the implementation of the language
itself - but more about the way python.exe handles things I guess :
Critiscms of Python
It doesn't escapethe spaces in filenames it is passed.
So associating .py with it and then double clicking on e.g. test.py in
"My Documents\" fails with the error can't find 'My '.
If it is running in memory doubleclicking an associated file *ignores*
the filename (along with any commandline parameters you've just
typed)..... So if you edit the script and then rerun it - you just bring
up the old window (with the old error msg. :-). This effectively means
you can only run a script if you *first* make sure python is not already
running......
In idle (opr whatever its called !) - long lines (error mesgs etc)
aren't displayed properly. You can cut and paste them ok to bring up the
horizontal slider bar... but when its first printed there's no slider
bar to read them.

I think, perhaps, most Pocket PC devices are sitting in desk drawers these days.
Certainly I almost never use my iPaq. I was just going to say, oh its a pretty good
clock on my desk in the cradle, but now I note its 20 minutes fast!

I've read on this list that others have done this and it works. I don't have an external
storage card so I've never been able to test it.

This is probably a limitation of the argv parsing on CE (I assume you're talking about
CE).

No surprise here, the Pocket PC OS only allows one instance of an executable to run
at a time. It's not clear to me what gets called in the running program to say "oh hey,
they just clicked this file too ..". You have any ideas?

You might be able to fix this in the main startup script that is the 'shell', I think its
ceshell.py or maybe ppceshell.py

I don't think that's practical on the pocket pc because the python dll is so large.
Imagine packaging up multiple dlls in a .zip, huge.

*Well* - you could put the program in a 'wrapper' that first checks if theres
a version in memory... if there is it kills it (or requests it to die :-)
and *then* it calls python.exe ... call it launcher.exe or something. It
could even check the filenames and escape them with ""....

I actually use my Jornada and an external folding keyboard for
on-the-go wordprocessing. I can carry both of them easily in a
small brief case, a backpack, or in two large pockets. The
combination is much lighter and convenient than my laptop.
Now, the package would become even more useful if I could only
access the PPC's network connections from PythonCE. I haven't
figured out how to do this. Does anyone have any suggestions?
