Sorry, that was meant to go to the list:

What tends to happen is that something decides to automatically
uncompress, or "fix" the name, so you end up with a .tgz file which
actually only contains .tar data, or a .tar file which is gzipped as
well.

Renaming the file usually fixes this for me.
