Just for completness sake, I'd like to point out that, if both of those
boxes are checked, it is not necessary to use "Edit->Mark" before
dragging a selection rectangle.  That's only if the boxes are clear.

Also, for those of us who keep our hands on the keyboard most of the
time, you can bring up the system menu with Alt-Space.  Alt-Space, E, K
(for mark) and Alt-Space, E, P (for paste).  It is possible to drag a
rectangle using the cursor keys and shift-cursor keys, but that's one
occasion where the mouse really is much more efficient.
