From dfh at forestfield.co.uk Mon Sep 4 10:27:01 2017 From: dfh at forestfield.co.uk (David Hughes) Date: Mon, 4 Sep 2017 15:27:01 +0100 Subject: [python-uk] Work for your own company? Message-ID: <0e68b579-6ded-aaab-403c-99d617e742a4@forestfield.co.uk> Forgive me writing on a subject that probably doesn't interest the great majority of readers who are happily working for companies on cutting edge Python projects (no doubt with unpronounceable names containing no vowels!) but I'm trying to find out if there is anyone who'd like to explore getting involved with a small, currently one person, company developing and selling a single, at the moment, product with a view to eventually taking it over. It's now in its 28th year and, since becoming Python based around 15 years ago, it has been successful enough to keep the family fed and in reasonable comfort but I'm now significantly over state pensionable age, looking to wind down but believe it would be pity just to shut up shop and walk away from a going concern. It's not particularly challenging technically - currently migrating from Python 2.7 to 3.6 with wxPython, Reportlab and various open-source and commercial SQL databases on Windows and OS X - and the majority of day to day work is all the associated non-technical stuff. If you are interested, please drop me a line but - unless you deliberately intend to do it - take care to reply just to me and not to the whole list. To be absolutely sure, you can also contact me directly using dfhmeibion.com -- Regards David Hughes Forestfield Software Ltd. However, I've just posted the following article on my personal blog that explains why Peter and I shouldn't be nominated (as well as why the award was created): http://ntoll.org/article/saying-thank-you It boils down to this: the John Pinner award is for the unsung heroes. People like me and Peter already get recognition in the community (for example, I've already been given the PSF's community service award) and so many people don't get the thanks they deserve. This award is for them. I hope this makes sense! As always, I'm more than happy to answer any questions. GET NOMINATING!!!! N. Someone who volunteers at Raspberry Jams, someone who runs Python workshops, who helps with Django Girls, who does the Python stuff in the local library's Code Club, who organises a meetup or who turns up at one to support people, who persuades their company to host a Python Dojo, who helps answer people's Python questions on StackOverflow or the ComputingAtSchool forums, who operates behind the scenes of the Python mailing lists, who answers the same teacher's newbie question for the nth time, who produces worksheets or cheatsheets or flash cards to help people learn, who volunteers in the local Adult Education Centre to help people begin to program, who turns up month after month or year after year to that Python event, never making a fuss, but standing for the Community? Do you know anyone like that? Then nominate them for the John Pinner awards, named after the man who did so much of that himself, and without whose understated dynamism we wouldn't have PyCon UK. Go to this page. Do it now. http://2017.pyconuk.org/pinner-award/ Put down whoever you can think of who contributes time and effort to supporting the Python community in the UK in any way. They are a nonprofit specializing in human rights, with an incredibly relaxed large studio office with plenty of light and many amazing corners to hack away in. I cannot emphasize enough how much I love this office and team, they're unparalleled in all my time in London; a 20-ish strong group of talented researchers from all backgrounds and walks of life, regular team activities and drinks, an amazing coffee machine, tea selection, and part time office dog that you can take home for the evening if you feel so inclined. Tech-wise, most existing projects are in Django, with lots of Angular used in the past couple of years, Ansible for deployment, hosted on AWS with a managed service company providing AWS support for when your hands are otherwise full. The position would be an ideal fit for a sharp mid-level developer eager for an environment that emphasizes relaxed creativity and a healthy working environment over late nights and impossible deadlines, with a workflow composed entirely of meaningful real world projects. https://smallmedia.org.uk/about/careers/back-end-developer Please drop Riccardo a link with your CV and GitHub, or feel free to ask me questions off-list. So we're hiring a software engineer, which plenty basic machine learning / data science work, to join my new team in an early stage proptech startup. In short, we are doing data mining for commercial real estate investors. Our founders have amble experience and deep connections in the industry, and like you'd expect of a startup, are infectiously passionate about what they do. The team is a mix of jr and sr front end and a few seasoned python developers with past work in data science applications. We are all big believers in functional programming (our front end is in Elm, for instance), continuous learning (I used to lead a study group on SICP), and a sane, healthy work life. We're based near Waterloo in a WeWork office. This is full time and onsite. The role is to help build our back-end data mining infrastructure. Techwise we like: Elm, numpy, sklearn, postgres, clojure, rust, haskell, racket (we're not necessarily using all of those, but we like talking about the latter few.) We're not worried about what your current skillset is, or how much experience you've had. We chiefly are interested in your capacity to learn. We've budgeted for an annual salary of 50-60k GBP DOE. Equity as well. Sound interesting? Feel free to email me here, or check out our website here: http://www.triviumre.com. Best, M.e.
