Due to scheduling mishaps I need to give up what is otherwise an incredibly fun and engaging project on a great team, however my loss may be your gain, so please read on.. :) This project would suit someone with good overall Python toolset knowledge, at least an exposure to Django (although preferably a bit more than that), and ideally a strong knowledge of, or burning desire to see PostgreSQL used in extreme anger. The product is a mobile data analytics platform, consisting of: * One user-facing Django application serving up an Angular app and implementing it's backing API using Django rest_framework. You do not need to touch the Angular parts, but a passing familiarity with Angular and the contemporary frontend toolchain may be beneficial. * One device-facing Django application serving up a separate Django rest_framework API and implementing a bunch of preprocessing logic for incoming impressions. * A pretty hairy PostgreSQL installation, making heavy use of SQLAlchemy Core to generate reporting queries, along with an Rq-based task queue that maintains consistency between raw impression data and materialized summaries based on user filters. Example query: https://gist.github.com/dw/c6cf10f83d1ccb9606ff * Device-side SDKs for Android and iOS. This role does not cover these components, but if you enjoy flexing your Objective C or Java skills, that could be a big plus. Our full tech list: * Python 2.7 & virtualenv * Django 1.8, rest_framework 3.2 * SQLAlchemy 0.9 * Ansible 1.9 * PostgreSQL 9.4 * Redis 3.0 and Rq 0.5 * Ubuntu 14.04 For more information, please get in touch by forwarding a recent CV to Isambard Poulson at , including a few short comments on problems you've spotted or improvements you might make to the example query linked above. We are looking for Computer Scientists (with an interest in science and computation), or Physicists, Engineers, ... (with an interest in Python and computation), who like working with Python and want to take part in a 4-year PhD programme to develop software tools for computational science. Project 1 ========= The first project is to develop (in Python) a tool that accepts partial differential equations (for example specified in sympy), and a mesh and some more parameters, and generates -- through different backends -- code that can be compiled to execute on a CPU, or parallel system (OpenMP/MPI) or a GPU. More details are available at http://ngcm.soton.ac.uk/projects/Automatic-code-generation-for-computational-science.html Project 2 ========= The second project is to develop a particular simulation code (for the magnetism at the nanoscale) that executes on large parallel machines (such as Iridis [http://cmg.soton.ac.uk/iridis] and ARCHER [http://www.archer.ac.uk/about-archer/]) using MPI, based on a finite difference discretisation of space. As scientists love Python, we would like this code to have a Python interface for the user, and would like to write as much of this as possible at the Python level. More details at http://ngcm.soton.ac.uk/projects/High-Performance-Computing-Micromagnetics.html Resulting tools codes will be made available on github, developed with tests in an agile way, etc. The training programme and research environment =============================================== Both projects are to be carried out as part of the Centre for Doctoral Training in Next Generation Computational Modelling (http://ngcm.soton.ac.uk), which provides unique training in Computational Science, and has chosen Python as one of the core tools in its training and research activities. I believe some on this list attended the Summer Academy in June 2015 (http://ngcm.soton.ac.uk/summer-academy/index.html) that was organised by the same centre (we will have another summer academy in June 2016). See also our list of facilities, studentship and support details on offer at http://ngcm.soton.ac.uk/facilities.html Project start date and application deadline =========================================== Both projects are to start in the middle of September 2016, but applications are invited now; earlier applications will increase chances of success. If you are interested or have informal queries, please get in touch (fangohr at soton.ac.uk). This is a fun way of getting to know the Python standard library. It should be suitable for all levels of skill (at Python and at puzzle solving), as we can help each other. We obviously need at least half the people coming to have laptops with them, with Python already installed, so please indicate if you can bring one when you RSVP. There should be food (this will be confirmed nearer the time). Meetings after that will be: ? Tuesday 5th January 2016 - Ben Nuttall on "GPIO Zero", and Bring a Question ? Tuesday 2nd February 2016 - Deep Learning with Python ? Tuesday 1st March 2016 - to be determined Please note that we are also now on meetup.com, at http://www.meetup.com/CamPUG/. If possible, please RSVP there for meetings so we have an idea of numbers. As an incentive, there's much more detail about each meeting there. We're going to use Python to build a modern infrastructure for interacting with both consumers (via the web, mobile apps and smart-meters) and the industry (eg trading on the wholesale market, managing the billing life cycle). To start with, we'll be using Django and the Django-REST-framework for the consumer-facing sites, and employing Pandas and Numpy for some of the heavier data processing required. We use AWS heavily, employing most of the Hashicorp toolset (Vagrant, Packer, Consul, Terraform) and are planning to use Lambda to build event-driven functionality. This is a great opportunity for several reasons: - We have lots of difficult *design* challenges to solve. The UK energy market is very complicated and process-heavy - there's an awful lot of domain modelling that we need to get right. - We have difficult *technical* problems to solve. With the advent of smart meters, we'll soon be processing millions of meter readings a day. We need the right technology in place to handle this smoothly as well as feeding data into a machine learning pipeline that models and predicts consumption. - There's a great opportunity for disruption in the UK energy market. The big suppliers still dominate, but are not exactly popular. The energy landscape is changing as we move to more disaggregated forms of generation, with less predictability, more dynamism and smarter technology. - You'll be working for a company that is genuinely helping to make the world a better place. We'll be helping move people onto using greener technology and consuming energy from renewable sources. This will all help transition the UK towards a lower carbon future. More details here: http://tech.octopus.energy/2015/11/23/tech-jobs.html Our offices are in Hammersmith. We're open to some remote working but not 100% remote at this early stage of the company.
