The talk will start by looking at several profiling techniques (equally useful for web-based and I/O bound tasks too!) and then move on to C compilation (Cython, ShedSkin), multiprocessing and multi-computer processing with a quick look at CUDA-based processing and PyPy at the end. The goal will be to show you a number of techniques to make CPU-bound processes run faster on 1 or many machines." http://brightonpy.org/meetings/2011-07-12/ Cheers Jamie From pythonsheffield at gmail.com Thu Jul 14 08:53:32 2011 From: pythonsheffield at gmail.com (Daley Chetwynd) Date: Thu, 14 Jul 2011 07:53:32 +0100 Subject: [python-uk] Next Python Sheffield July 26th Message-ID: Hi all, The next Python Sheffield meeting has now been confirmed for Tuesday July 26th at the GIST Lab. At 7:30 there is a talk, which is expected to last for about half an hour. After that we will head to a pub for more geeky chat. The meetings are always good fun, and everyone of any level of experience or interest in Python is extremely welcome. Bring a friend! Talk: "Safe" - Peter Russell ---------------------------- Peter will be talking about Safe - an internal Python application used at KPI Gold LLP for managing backups. The talk will include: * Why we wrote Safe * How it works and what it does * An overview of its architecture and design * A digression into Python's with statement and context managers * An embarrassing story, showing why it can make sense to have backups of your backups! Experience Level: The talk should be suitable to anyone who knows a bit about Python. Of Interest To: Looking at someone else's project is always interesting, but this talk should be of particular interest to anyone interested in real world uses of Python, or anyone wanting to learn more about Python's with statement and writing context managers. About the Group =============== The West Yorkshire Python User Group (WYPy) have been meeting monthly since 2007. Damien Marshall works with Demonware as a Team Lead in Title Development. In this role he works on developing the technologies that power the online components of some of the worlds biggest games, such as Call of Duty. He holds a Phd in Electronic Engineering from NUI Maynooth, where he specialised in the study of data management mechanisms for online games. Prior to working at Demonware, Damien worked as a lecturer on the Computer Games Development course at IT Carlow and also lectured on the Electronic Engineering course at NUI Maynooth. Damien will discuss how Python is a crucial component to the success of Demonware. Using case studies of services developed for shipped games, he will explain how and why Demonware first embraced Python as one its core technologies, and how Demonware continues to use it to develop services that can scale to handle tens of thousands of requests per second with millisecond request response times.
