I also made sure that both the main site and the Wiki were registered with google, Alta Vista, Lycos etc. Oh, and I emailed daily@pythonware.com to try and get a mention on the Daily Python URL. Since I wasn't sure what else we could do to publicise the conference, I asked on the marketing-python list about where to market a Python conference. They have suggested the following: * Zope lists - post to zope-announce, at least. * Slashdot * linuxpr.com * emailing an announcement to Stephan Deibel [sdeibel@wingide.com]: > If you email me an announcement appropriate for release to the press, I > can send it out to I mailing list that I maintain. It's mostly US press > people, but it's still worth doing as it at least represents more > instances of the word "Python" popping up for the media to see. Does anyone want to take over any of these, or should I go ahead and do it myself? If it's the second one, does anyone have a pointer to the full announcement that went out to c.l.p etc. I tried googling for it, but couldn't find it. This way I could add a link to the Wiki to the end and send it off. Also, has anyone written an actual 'Press Release' that could be forwarded to Stephan, or would it just be another version of the announcement? -- John Precedo (johnp@reportlab.com) Developer Reportlab Europe Ltd (http://www.reportlab.com) From python-uk@python.org Thu Mar 20 15:52:33 2003 From: python-uk@python.org (John Precedo) Date: Thu, 20 Mar 2003 15:52:33 -0000 Subject: [python-uk] Re: FW: [marketing-python] Where to market a Python Conference? I did some research and some marketing type activity for the conference, rather than organisation and setting prices. I'm forwarding this on to the Python UK mailing list. I'm sure the right person to ask will be on that! -- John Precedo (johnp@reportlab.com) Developer Reportlab Europe Ltd (http://www.reportlab.com) > -----Original Message----- > From: Leon Brocard [mailto:acme@geekflat.org]On Behalf Of Leon Brocard > Sent: 30 March 2003 19:01 > To: johnp@reportlab.com > Subject: Python UK conf > > > Hello, sorry if you're not the right guy to ask, but you're > the only email address I found on http://www.python-uk.org/. > > I would love to go, apart from the price. 570 pounds is an awful lot > of money. The lineup looks great but at that price it > would have been > > cheaper to fly to PyCon ;-) Fair question ;-) First, the Python conference is only 2 days so you only have to pay for 2 days. If you pay ?25 to join the ACCU, the price is ?260. This is sort of "mid range" for professionally run conferences, not dirt cheap but not the worst I have seen. Second, the ACCU has kindly arranged this event for us and just asked if we wanted to add Python tracks; we are saying "yes" for the second time in a row. They run it to break even but the event DOES have to cover the event manager's salary and all the costs of a professional conference centre; it's not a "volunteer effort". We have absoutely no say in the costs. Our choice each year is simple. We can accept their offer of having a superbly-organised event which puts Python "up there" with C++ and Java, and a budget to get speakers like Guido with no risk to ourselves, or we can decline it. Sadly we can't persuade them to halve the price :-) There is no way it can ever compete with a volunteer effort like EuroPython on price, and for this reason I expect EuroPython will be 2-3 times as popular at least. - Andy From python-uk@python.org Mon Mar 31 15:16:20 2003 From: python-uk@python.org (Duncan Booth) Date: Mon, 31 Mar 2003 16:16:20 +0100 Subject: [python-uk] RE: Python UK conf In-Reply-To: References: <20030330180056.GA17617@kanga.astray.com> Message-ID: <3E8869D4.28488.183EA09@localhost> On 31 Mar 2003 at 15:53, John Precedo wrote: > > I would love to go, apart from the price. 570 pounds is an awful lot > > of money. ACCU members pay =A3475, or they could go to the 2 Python days for =A3260. Since ACCU membership is a massive =A315, there doesn't seem much point paying the non-member rates. One thing that pushes the price up is that speakers get transport and accomodation paid. I'm cheap (over the last two conferences I've claimed one night in a hotel and meals) but most speakers probably cost a lot more. I don't think the low cost conferences pay for speaker accomodation, and some even charge speakers admission. (A quick look at YAPC::Europe site seems to indicate that speakers get free entry but no other expenses, nevertheless 99 EUR is pretty impressive pricing). ACCU is good at getting high calibre speakers, and this is in no small part due to their having the budget to pay for them. I have found a lot of other conferences which charge speakers tend to end up with speakers who are there trying to sell something. (This is all generalisations of course, there are probably some very cheap excellent conferences out there). -- Duncan Booth duncan@dales.rmplc.co.uk int month(char *p){return(124864/((p[0]+p[1]- p[2]&0x1f)+1)%12)["\5\x8\3" "\6\7\xb\1\x9\xa\2\0\4"];} // Who said my code was obscure? http://dales.rmplc.co.uk/Duncan
