I want us to take this note both as a greeting and also as a charge, we must ensure that our plan to create and enhance growth individually and as a community needs to be acted upon in a proactive manner. Reminders: Django Girls WorkshopReminders: Lite Meetup We can do this together, and by the way I hope some of us were able to check out the links I sent In a previous digest, I was able to get my startup on the Google Launchpad and I must say It has been a great experience. I will always be committed to all things community and I am sure that with our collective efforts we will be able to make a blast this year in and for all things PYTHON. I just did a random google search of DjangoGirls Lagos and all these lot popped out and to say It was exhilarating and mind blowing will be putting it mildly. I am really grateful. Here are some of the listings we've had so far. There's no such thing as too much publicity for a worthy cause ;) -- http://pulse.ng/tech/django-girls-lagos-non-profit-to-help-women-get-involved-with-technology-id4520648.html --http://heyevent.com/event/peltscmtoqyjga/djangogirls-lagos --http://nigeria.siguez.com/lagos/lagos-nigeria/djangogirls-lagos?5ouxbali06 -- http://www.stuntfm.com/2016/01/04/django-girls-lagos-non-profit-to-help-women-get-involved-with-technology/ --http://hapfind.com/event/fb/djangogirls-lagos_3873382 --http://allevents.in/lagos/djangogirls-lagos/474091086131220 Secondly, PyCon Namibia is fast approaching and remember how I said my proposal for a talk which will center around the Nigerian Python community got accepted http://na.pycon.org/schedule/talks/aisha.html So as an Idea; I thought I should quote some of you guys during my presentation and slides. I think it would be nice to tell the world in our own voice directly from the Horse's mouth what we think and hope to achieve for all things Python in Nigeria. So if you want to say anything about the community and hopes for the future or just anything you would like to say, please drop a line here or shoot me an email, and I will add it on my presentation quoting you. I am looking to get 5 different quotes to add to my presentation. Finally I just heard about the Women's Technology Empowerment Center in Ibadan from a fellow Pythonista. Did I mention they do an introductory Python class as part of the program and use SCRATCH with Raspberry Pi. #SuperCool. If anyone has any news on anything Python related that is happening in Nigeria, please do share here. I am hoping this platform also serves as an information hub to all things python in Nigeria so we can reach out to these organisations and offer our support as a community as DjangoGirls is already benefiting from this community. As time goes on when we set up our official user's group website we will curate all the content relating to python activities in Nigeria. Cheers to a SUPERSONIC 2016 and to all the great milestones we will all set to achieve in this new year both personally and for all things community related. Greetings, Aisha Bello From aishabello2050 at gmail.com Sat Jan 9 00:15:38 2016 From: aishabello2050 at gmail.com (Aisha Bello) Date: Sat, 9 Jan 2016 05:15:38 +0000 Subject: [python-nigeria] Update: Another popular feature, on meetups, #OurStory#OurVoice, and a note of correction Message-ID: Dear Pythonistas, Happy weekend, hope your week wasn't so stressful? First of just to update you guys that we had another popular feature on olorisupergal website thanks again to #Wale http://olorisupergal.com/django-girls-lagos-set-to-hold-programming-workshop-for-ladies/ I had a conversation with Olabayo this past week, and came up with these suggestions. Since there was a really low response rate on the lite meetup being planned, we might as well just leave the meetup until the major meetup that would happen at the DjangoGirls thank you coach's dinner immediately after the DjangoGirls workshop. The meetup will come with a separate planning which am happy to double up alongside the coach's dinner (same venue). More details on the meetup will be provided here soon. It's a free meetup for all pythonistas in Nigeria, but would be close knit and require registration(maybe eventbrite) to make organizing more manageable as we would also have to manage the resources we have. So if you would like to help out with planning for the meetup, contribute or got any ideas please get in touch. A brief reminder that I am still collecting quotes for the PyCon Namibia talk. I would really love to tell our story in your own words to the international python community. I have one on *PyCon Nigeria* :) Finally, just a note of correction from my prev. mail that the Women's Technology Empowerment centre is based in Lagos not in Ibadan. I humbly apologize for the semi-correct information. with warm greetings do have a Pythonic weekend *stolen* :D Aisha From aishabello2050 at gmail.com Thu Jan 21 03:30:42 2016 From: aishabello2050 at gmail.com (Aisha Bello) Date: Thu, 21 Jan 2016 08:30:42 +0000 Subject: [python-nigeria] I looked for trouble + Super exciting Features and Python Nigeria Message-ID: Dear Pythonistas, I hope this meets you well. I type this in a hurry before my many flying adventures begin so I apologize in advance for the typos. First of to true confessions, I went on radar at TechCabal and looked for trouble you can find the conversation here Since then the trouble has brought about really amazing friction from all major tech news hub in Nigeria. Shout shout to David Adeleke for the amazing article he wrote on Tech cabal here Even the Nigerian Computer society did one on us here thanks to Jide Awe. Techpoint thanks to Victor did another beautiful writeup here We are even on the African News hub via Techloy featured us here and here to say am excited and honored to be part of all this will be putting it mildly. *I am sure there are pretty much more I don't even know about* This wouldn't be coming through without the help of you guys, some of which are not even known to me but silently encouraging, supporting and putting the word out there. The Nigeria Python community is now a phrase gaining grounds that even non programmers are aware of. A massive thank you to everyone here, for your support, for volunteering to dedicate your time to mentor the girls and women that would attend and for making this community happen. I would be screaming from the rooftops and gathering support from the international Python community at PyCon Namibia next week for the Nigerian Python community and I promise to be a good ambassador and represent us well. Thanks to Naomi Ceder who helped me in creating a call to action for the Nigerian Python community during my presentation and thanks again to all of you who made it possible and for just being part of the community. I hope to meet some if not all of you pretty soon at the meetup in person so we can get the ball rolling for the community. I would be confirming details about the meetup, venue, etc. and all very soon toward the beginning of next month, but do save the date on your calendar(February 20th) and we can all confirm and sign off on the agenda for the meetup. Any ideas and if you want to help organize the meetup would be highly appreciated. Sending massive E-hugs to everyone and until I bring you more news from Windhoek, Namibia do have a Pythonic day ahead. If you've got any news, concerns, ideas e.t.c. do post here as the mailing list has just recently grown in the number of subscribers. It brought Pythonistas from different places around the globe to collaborate: Zambia, Zimbabwe, South Africa, Senegal, Germany, UK, US, Brazil to mention a few. If you would like to know more you can check the hashtag #PyConNa on twitter. Secondly, my talk amidst my personal journey also centered on getting support for our community was awesome. you can view the slides here . After the presentation we got a truck load of support from the international community. Pythonistas present first were asking for the date of the conference and how they would love to attend a PyCon in Nigeria which might turn out to be the first in West Africa. Presently over the last 5 years the only PyCons recorded have been in Southern Africa with the first one this year in Namibia and previous ones in South Africa. Since we are still new I am of the opinion that before moving on to a PyCon we could organize a 1-2 days Python Nigeria Conference for us local in Nigeria and learn from the experience, and then move forward to organize a PyCon next year (*My Opinion*). Hopefully we could all talk more about it during the meetup or possibly start the conversation here. <> Please if anyone would like to volunteer to help in organizing the meetup do get in touch. Just on a final note after the conference some of us who attended the conference talked about a Python Africa mailing list so all African pythonistas could keep in touch, network, while providing a single platform to collaborate and share ideas on projects et.al.., and also eventually the possibility of a PyCon Africa *similar to a Euro Python :D *. When the mailing list has been set up setup I'll inform everyone on here. Until I come your way with more news, wishing you all a Pythonic week ahead :D Aisha
