For clarity purposes: The workshop itself is meant for girls/women attendees that would be learning how to code in python, our coaches are a mix of both male and female mentors. This workshop ends on the 20th of February 4:30pm. After the workshop ends, the coach's thank you dinner would start around 6:00pm. The coach's dinner is intended to double up with the Nigerian Python meetup where all Nigerian pythonistas are welcome to attend regardless of their gender, as it is a separate agenda from the DjangoGirls Lagos workshop. I hope I have cleared the air. If you have any more questions don't hesitate to ask. More details will suffice when blanks like the venue & other logistics has been sorted. On a final note congratulations on the plan to host a DjangoGirls workshop in OAU which would take place in April. If you need any advice or help with organizing don't hesitate to ask. Two DjangoGirls workshops in Nigeria within 3 months. This is good news! Good to here the 'boys' are welcome too after the workshops. I found that at PyCon the combination with the DjangoGirls worked pretty well! Keep up the good work you all. Know that many of the people involved in PyCon Namibia are willing to help out with a major Python event in Nigeria. Here's bringing more news from the stables of LasGidi :) The Python- Africa mailing list I earlier spoke about that was born out of PyCon Namibia is up and running. To subscribe to the list: https://mail.python.org/mailman/listinfo/python-africa "African Python Users group -- Linking African Python Efforts, because We are Stronger Together" The plan is to connect all pythonistas in various African countries passionate about driving growth in Africa through Open source. DjangoGirls Lagos: We unveiled our Mentors for the workshop, and here's an official and massive shout out in honor of our mentors who will take the whole day out of their very busy schedules and other commitments to mentor over 30 girls/ women. Thank you still to everyone who have contributed in one way or the other to making the workshop a success. For all our collective efforts our first DjangoGirls workshop will be #Awesome thanks to everyone in our community. On a lighter note I got featured in the International DjangoGirls blog in my Django story where I mentioned our community :D *a few times* Just the way everyone came out here and lent a voice and helping hand to the Lagos event let's replicate the same for te DjangoGirls workshop in Ile-Ife. I am sure Lekan Wahab would update us here when he needs our help. Python Nigeria meetup: I am trying to finalize a venue for the meetup before the week runs out and I would be in touch on how to register for the meetup. On the Agenda for the Meetup I had a brief meeting with Bayo and we came up with a few pointers for the agenda and he would be posting soon the schedule so we could agree add or subtract if need be. Among other items on the agenda mentioned was PyNigeria, 5 minutes lightening talk/Pitch on open source projects anyone would like the community to collaborate on, setting up a committee for the Python Users group, A website et.al..... On a completely un-related to python note I came across this article by OONwoye on an open source project Nigeria needs I found myself agreeing with the fact that there is a need for a postcode system that would be implemented in Nigeria. Any thoughts? Maybe I could ask if they were implementing in Python we could join in :D Thoughts, Ideas e.t.c are highly welcome. Until I come your way with more news have a pythonic week ;) and I look forward to meeting a lot of you in our meetup next Saturday. Kind Regards, Aisha Bello From gbozee at gmail.com Tue Feb 9 13:16:27 2016 From: gbozee at gmail.com (Biola Oyeniyi) Date: Tue, 9 Feb 2016 19:16:27 +0100 Subject: [python-nigeria] python-nigeria Digest, Vol 7, Issue 4 In-Reply-To: References: Message-ID: Its really nice Aisha is doing everything possible to keep this mailing list active. Concerning the location/postcode api, I suggest we look at how fedex came up with their internal code system for the different states in the country. I happen to come across their excel doc containing their code system. I just uploaded the csv containing this information. The implementation / coding process won't really be an issue because a framework like geodjango is very suitable for this kind of project. The main hurdle to cross is getting the shapefiles for all the different vicinities/postcodes/areas in the country. The current publicly available shapefile for the country is grouped by administrative regions (LGA) which I think is too broad. These are my thoughts and suggestion. As we know our lite meetup is here already and this mail contains a draft of our intended agenda, please go through and voice your thoughts, flesh the list out etc. The meetup will be for an hour and a half (20th Feb - Saturday) at the CCHub (http://cchubnigeria.com). We will be limiting this to 30 attendees (not counting coaches) because of the space limitation and it will be available through a link to an eventbrite registration page which will be sent to the mailing list ASAP, but hopefully the next one will have no such constraints.? Note: Registration is not required for coaches in the Django Girls Workshop. Gracias to CCHub, and you guys for making this day happen. Will be expecting your generous feedback ASAP. Agenda Draft General and brief introduction of the python mailing list, its members as well as attendees of the meetup, plus a short presentation outlining the community?s goals and general aspirations to be met. Introduction of one or two notable pythonists amongst us and a 5 mins talk to sound out their experiences in the Nigerian tech space and also drop one or two words of encouragement. Discussion on the feasibility, preparation and timelines for holding the first ever PyNigeria (What it entails).Setting up of a committee (To develop guidelines, planning and misc involved in organizing PyNigeria and any other projects that come up) to be nominated from a pool of volunteers? 3 - 5 mins discussions on projects being handled by pythonists, their experiences and their advice etc. Discussion on working on a community based open source project: people submit ideas and a general vote will be drawn to pick our first major project. Discussions on the setting up of a python slack channel or similar platform to improve engagement and communication between members. Light refreshments (This can fall between any agreed time) Conclusion - Meetup final notes of appreciation to our host, organizers and attendees. On a final Note I have been working on a Startup called Hotels? & Perks and would? love for anyone with an android, IOS and blackberry device to install the app and give me any feedback and or tips for my team to note. User testing Ux Tips etc and by the way the api is running on our beloved python. The hotel booking is active so please avoid booking for now as we don?t want any hotel receiving false positives. I didn't know this mailing list existed until today. Thank you, Kosy. I just read the mail about promoting the knowledge of programming to the younger generation and thought to offer a suggestion, however impractical it may be. It would be nice if we could have centres where students could go to learn to program. They would serve not only to introduce programming to the students (like workshops and bootcamps) but also keep them interested. They could also offer the students the opportunity to be mentored by more experienced developers. I've done my best to keep this email 'above the fold' so it may lack a bit of detail. I wouldn't providing a more detailed explanation if need be. I wouldn't bore you with any excuses and just jump right on it. Also I apologize for my long email in advance ;) Biola : Thank you for your kind words. You guys make it easier with all the encouragement I get on here. As regards the postcode do you mind sharing the csv you uploaded that has the information for the different states in the country. I pointed OO Nwoye the author of the blogpost to this mailing list and the conversation he said he would do a reply on here. Considering the current so called post code system is too broad with over 10 streets having the same postcode someone also suggested using popular organizations within the vicinity something like a click and collect version for houses who cant be identified, but for example a hospital about a mile away can have a tag on it and for houses that don't even have an address yet can use the postcode of a nearby grocery shop as a means of pinpointing their address. Chukwudi: Thank you so much for your kind and inspiring words #NeverGiveup. The Python Africa mailing list aims to bring us African Pythonistas into one big space to promote open source solutions that are Made for Africa by Africans. #StrongerTogether Bright: My thank you's are in order :). It's awesome to have you here. I totally agree that the knowledge of programming needs to be taken to the younger generations. A few coding classes for children have started #HourofCode run by CChub and Code Nigeria co-run by Temi Adeoye who is also part of our python community. I agree we need more of these types of initiatives regularly run and if we can add that to our pet project for PyNigeria in taking *Learn Python* to secondary school children. I for one know that PyNam (The python community in Namibia) after their first Python Namibia conference in Jan 2015 have successfully embarked on going to various secondary schools in the country to teach Python. We should definitely add that to our to-do list among other things to promote python in Nigeria. What better way to go about it than teaching our future leaders programming. Lekan: Nice one. As a suggestion you might want to get in touch with bloggers like Tech Cabal, tech point e.t.c with a press release. I am sure they would be happy to spread the word. Hello Ifeanyi it's a pleasure to have you here. you're welcome to the community. For your idea about bootcamps and workshops I think it might be a good idea to give a 5 minutes lightening talk about it during the meetup if there is more to say. DjangoGirls: Thanks to cchub for allowing us expand our capacity. We increased the numbers to 39 attendees and 13 coaches as opposed to the initial plan of 30 attendees and 10 coaches, we had to many awesome applications and it was a hard choice. PyNigeria Agenda:Here's the link to register via eventbrite Like Bayo mentioned earlier CChub was kind enough to still give us their space for extra hours to run our meetup, but still constrained, hence DjangoGirls coaches do not need to register again for the meetup via event brite. Only a few days left until the 20th and I can't wait to meet many of you guys in person. I guess my only addition to the Agenda would be to put a timeline on the schedule, and anyone who would like to give a talk about open source projects they would like the community to work on should get in touch with Bayo so it can be included in the schedule for orderly purposes and so that the final schedule can be shared here just before the meetup. On a final note * I have been a bit worried considering the situation of some of our attendees.* Sometimes as it is the case in Nigeria having a laptop is a luxury to some people. Some of our attendees who have gotten accepted to attend the workshop don't have laptops and would have to borrow laptops to attend the workshop. Particularly one of the ladies wrote to me how she was robbed during the last month and her laptop was stolen and was looking to borrow a laptop for the workshop. As you know we don't have any hardware and although this is short notice as I should have done this a lot earlier. This is saddening because among the goals of the workshop it is important that the attendees go back home with what they have learnt home to continue on their learning to program journey, which might be difficult if you have to return the laptop back to it's owner. I am soliciting to kind hearted Nigerians via our community. If you know anyone who wants to do away with their old or refurbished laptops or just want to help out whichever way please do get in touch. Even tweeting or RT the appeal to your network would go a long way in seeing that at least maybe these ladies won't have to borrow a laptop after all and they would be equipped with the ultimate tool(computer) in continuing in their programming journey. *Whew* am hoping I haven't missed anything. Here's wishing everyone a Pythonic and productive week ahead ;) Aisha From naomi.ceder at gmail.com Sun Feb 14 16:56:18 2016 From: naomi.ceder at gmail.com (Naomi Ceder) Date: Sun, 14 Feb 2016 15:56:18 -0600 Subject: [python-nigeria] Thoughts on the upcoming meetup... and the future Message-ID: Hello everyone. Since there are quite a few new people on this list (yay!), let me introduce myself again. I'm Naomi Ceder and I'm a long time (since 2001) Pythonista, Python author (Quick Python Book, 2nd Ed, working on 3rd ed), organizer, and a vice chair of the board of directors of the Python Software Foundation. I'm proud to call Aisha and Chukwudi friends and I hope electronically at least I will become friends with more of you. I have never been to Africa, I'm sorry to say, but I'm happy that my small involvement in this list was in getting the mailing list access going and the admin switched to Olabayo. I'm still his backup admin, but I'm sure we'd all be happy if one or two of you stepped forward to assist with that. As I have been reading the messages on this list I've been impressed by the insight and professionalism I've seen. You all are a great bunch and I'm certain that you will build a solid community of Pythonistas in Nigeria. I read the draft agenda for your first meetup and it seems very sound, but perhaps a lot to cover. I wish the best as you meet. It's very exciting to be in on the beginning of something, so I envy you that. I've been meaning to post here for some time, but hadn't done it until Aisha encouraged me to do so. Partly I firmly believe that the people in each place are the best experts in what works for them. You all know far better than some old lady in America what will work for you in Nigeria. However maybe I have a few pieces of advice that may serve you. So here goes, thank you for your patience: - *Be kind to each other*. The tone of this list has been wonderful, so keep that. Even in disagreements remember that everyone is sincerely striving for the same thing and be kind. - *Share the load*. No one has the energy and the time to do everything, so please take the time to put yourself out there and pitch in. All levels of contribution are valuable, but the ones who seek to understand the problems and work to fix them without prompting are priceless. Sharing the load is far better than having just a few do the work who then become burnt out and quit. - *Share the load*. On the other side, even if you think you can do everything, perhaps better than others, make room for people who want to help. No, you can't do everything, and not giving people a chance to contribute will drive them away. - *Join us*. But "us" I mean the wider Python community, in particular the Python Software Foundation. Connections with other communities can offer help in a number of ways. There are a few things you can do: - Join the Python-Africa mailing list to add your voice there - https://mail.python.org/mailman/listinfo/python-africa - add a presence (even if it's a link to this mailing list's info page) for Nigeria on the Python wiki's user groups page - https://wiki.python.org/moin/LocalUserGroups#Other_Africa - Become a member of the Python Software Foundation. Basic membership is free, just go to https://www.python.org/accounts/login/ and create an account and you are a basic member! - Join/post on the PSF-Community mailing list. All PSF members around the world are welcome to post and connect using that list. It would be great place to let the world of Python know what you are doing. - Become a voting member of the PSF - if you put in 5 hours a month (or 60 hours a year) doing Python community work (organizing, coding, documentation, etc) you are eligible to become a voting member. Voting members vote to elect the board members (like me), to accept sponsor companies, and on other issues of governance as they arise. The more diverse and widespread our voters are the more likely the board and governance will represent everyone and make better decisions, so we really need you. The info on becoming a voting member this way is at http://pyfound.blogspot.de/2015/02/enroll-as-psf-voting-member.html - Working group. The PSF has a structure to create working groups for projects as needed. If you have a project or goal, we might be able to create a working group. Contact me for more advice on that. - Get funding. The PSF offers funding for meetups and conferences around the world. For more information on how to do this, go to https://www.python.org/psf/grants/ and I again would be happy to help out. Wow... I'm sorry that was so long! Take it for what you will. But finally, please don't hesitate to get in touch with me if there is some way I can support your efforts. I guess I could use many words to say it was successful but that wouldn't do justice and I will leave that to everyone to express their own views. The workshop was awesome, I personally learnt some new things, for instance I didn't know the current Django framework came with a way to create your own virtual environment, in the past i had to install another tool to create mine. Coaches will agree with me that it was fun teaching and debugging and doing some more debugging and then finally seeing the smiles on their ?faces when their first web page covered their browsers!!! Thank you everyone for making this possible. ? Moving on to the meetup I will do a quick rundown of what we were able to cover, ideas and tasks/initiatives that we were able to develop. Note this is a light recap and will do a more detailed one.? Introduction of the mailing list and the role that everyone played in making it possible (its reactivation) and notably Naomi's effort in reaching out to an admin (General Python Mailing List) thus helping out immensely. We listed the goals of our community and mentioned that we all had a part to play together to ensure its continuous growth, development and promotion of initiatives that would develop us individually and collectively. General consensus to hold a Lite PyNigeria which would set the stage for the major PyNigeria, committee responsibleCreation of a committee responsible for planning, creation of guidelines and misc involved in developing our Lite PyNigeria as well as other projects that would be developed. Their names will be published to the mailing list and I also want to use this opportunity to thank them for volunteering.? Creation of a slack channel for the community details will be sent to the mailing list ASAP Open source initiative called Emergency Ng details will be sent to the mailing list ASAP Contributions by attendees on numerous projects they were handling, pain points, ideas and their willingness to make contributions to the community in terms of open sourcing one or two products they had created. More details will be sent to the mailing list ASAP Pardon me if this seems rushed, I will do a proper and more detailed breakdown as we forge ahead. I am also sure that many will add to what i have said or left out in error.?Thank you everyone for making my day and thank you for your constant support.?Cheers!!! The 20th of February had a lot of highlights for me. Asides from the fact that many of you came out to support and be mentors to the ladies I was more so thrilled and touched that someone from our very own Py Nigeria community heard me. In my last email I talked about how I was soliciting for old laptops for some of Django girls who had to borrow laptops to participate in the workshop. And I am happy to say that someone who chooses to remain anonymous came during the Python-Nigeria meetup and donated two laptops to the ladies *oh my, the tears of joy in the ladies eyes* would always be imprinted in my heart. I discover many more reasons to fall in love with the python community both home and abroad and I am humbled to be a part of this great movement. It was really a great pleasure to put a face to many names here during the Python Nigeria meetup and thanks to Tosin Damilare who did a post about how the meeting went At this point this also serves as the minutes of the meeting. Thanks Tosin. On a different note **it appears we forgot to talk about registering PyNigeria or PythonNigeria as a not for profit organization in Nigeria.** Permit me if am wrong. I am also working on a blog post for Djangogirls Lagos and would share that on here in case anyone wants to know more about how DjangoGirls went; plus official photos ;). I am also glad that some of the girls are looking to organize a DjangoGirls in Ogbomosho for Oyo state women......#SuperExciting On that note I would like to make a request that DjangoGirlsOAU is still looking for Mentors. I have encouraged many of #DjangoGirls Lagos attendees to apply *what better way to learn more than to teach the little you know to the next person*, So on behalf of DjangoGirls OAU I humbly request anyone who has the time to spare to support DjangoGirls OAU by applying to be a mentor. Special thanks to everyone in the community who made DjangoGirls Lagos successful, we couldn't have done it without you. Hi Jonathan you're welcome to the community. Glad to have you on here. And that's it for now....Until I bring you more news really soon....and looking forward to meet you all again during our next *PyNig* *PyNigeria* *Python Nigeria* or *Py Naija* meetup :) ..... Greetings, Aisha Bello
