We will very much like to see the python community grow here and are grateful for your availability to help. Right now there are a number of python developers here but we have not organised any kind of event (none that I know of). So holding the djangogirls thingy will be a very good start to getting people together. BTW there is this meetup that we are starting (will send the link in a bit). I am the lead developer at Hotels & Perks: www.hotelsnperks.com. I have been programming for a while but I recently picked up python ( about 1.5 years) and? I must say it has been joy all through. I implemented our api/backend in python, must say I have been having a lovely experience, If I had to choose all over again I would definitely make the same choice. I hope to be able to contribute in anyway I can to the collective building of our vibrant community. I am encouraging everyone to also send an informal introduction so we can get to know a bit about us the python way (smiley..). Going forward I would love for us to maximize this mailing list by using it as a tool to drop feedback, comments or suggestions, events, news, anything python that you want the community to access. Again I say welcome to everyone, it is a real pleasure being a part of something as refreshing, creative and productive as this python community.? A big thank you to Naomi, Aisha and every python enthusiast here and everywhere. Have a beautiful day everyone and stay awesome. I am currently studying for a master's in Information Technology. I have been a DjangoGirl since July this year which was my first ever encounter to the beautiful world of Python. I am also doing my dissertation in the field of Data Minning and Machine learning and trying to predict future customer's profile of a hotel using Open source data mining tools and definitely implementing in Python :D. Among other things I am a Tech and Python community enthusiast and I am also helping to co-organize a DjangoGirls event in Windhoek at the PyCon Namibia happening in January, and it's a pleasure to virtually meet you all. DjangoGirls which is a global not for profit organization is focused on teaching women the basics of programming by learning how to build a website in #Html #CSS #Python and #Django. Since Inception in 2014 it has been held by volunteers all over the world in 51 countries, and I am excited that we would be hosting our first workshop in Lagos on the 20th of February with a pre-install party on the 19th. I would love to say thank you for all the positive feedback and support I have gotten from everyone here and I look forward to further correspondence. If you would like to be a mentor or knows a company who would like to sponsor the event find more details at www.djangogirls.org/lagos On Community, I am really passionate about growing the community and promoting python in Nigeria. Because I have your support; on the footer of the website, and also on the sponsorship proposal I have added that we have the support of the Nigerian Python community, and put a link to the mailing list on the website, hopefully that would provide more publicity for the list, so all passionate Nigerian Pythonistas can converge in one place and we can share ideas on how to move the community forward. After the DjangoGirls event we would have a thank you dinner for the coaches, I was thinking we could make it into the first meet and greet of the Nigerian Python Community and even if you can't be there to coach you can join us afterwards for the dinner. A round table discussion on everything community would be a very good way to startup. If you all are interested then we could talk more about it. I also plan on using all DjangoGirls platform to promote the Nigerian Python community via social media and to more groups I intend to reach out to. I am making other plans to submit a proposal at the PyCon Namibia conference about the Nigerian Python Community and DjangoGirls *fingersCrossed*. You all would agree that we have a beautiful story to tell as to how this came, about and I am more than happy to tell it, reaching out to other Nigerian pythonistas and garnering support and awareness from the Python community in other parts of Africa and in the globe as a whole. And who knows we might just be hosting the newest Python conference in Nigeria in a not too distant future. More importantly is to come up with ways on how to promote Python in Nigeria from the ground level up and using the power of code to change Nigeria as a whole, like what code for Nigeria is doing for primary and secondary school students among others. There's more to be said but I should stop here, apologies for the really long email *bad habit*. Many thanks for your time and I am looking forward to further talking and meeting all of you in person really soon :) Greetings, From gbozee at gmail.com Wed Dec 2 14:39:26 2015 From: gbozee at gmail.com (Biola Oyeniyi) Date: Wed, 2 Dec 2015 20:39:26 +0100 Subject: [python-nigeria] Good Morning Everyone: Introduction. This past week has been awesome needless to say. First of My proposal to PyCon Namibia was accepted and I would be telling our story to an audience of global community of Pythonistas in Windhoek, Namibia about DjangoGirls Lagos and the Nigerian Python community. Git Hub is proudly sponsoring our event and are giving our 30 attendees and 10 coaches(40) free 1 year coupons to GitHub micro plan which includes 5 private repositories which is valued at $84/year. I guess I don't need to emphasize what tremendous value this is. Also sending e-hugs and a shout out to Naomi Ceder who is backup admin of this list and PSF board member for all her support. She is DjangoGirls Lagos official cupcakes sponsor.....*yaaay* The final awesome news. So I attended the TEDxEuston conference and met Mark Essien C.E.O of hotels.ng after his inspirational talk at the conference. I spoke to him about the Django Girls event and the Nigerian Python community (I didn't even know before he was a pythonista :D) I told him about the community conversations and how we intend for DjangoGirls Lagos coach's dinner to also be the first gathering of the Nigerian Python community. There and then he expressed interest in attending and added the date of the event to his Calendar. This is awesome news as asides being an awesome networking event for Nigerian Pythonistas it will also be a source of inspiration to the women who would just be beginning their journey with learning how to code For everyone who has indicated their passion to support to DjangoGirls in Lagos please register as a coach here https://djangogirls.org/lagos/#coach and be one of 10 mentors to 3 women during the workshop. Also if you would like your company to sponsor us please shoot me an email or forward your inquiries to lagos at djangogirl.org I would close with this few words "Do you want to be a participant or a spectator in the growth of our community as a tool to better Nigeria" "The world needs dreamers and the world need doers but what the world really needs is Dreamers who Do". I want to encourage everyone already hereto take time out of their very busy schedule to introduce themselves, drop comments and suggestions for the community and let's get the ball rolling. It would really be sad to see *the Nigerian factor* come to play here. Wishing you all a great week ahead. Message-ID: In the summer of 2014, I was opportune to learn about the on-line (IRC-based) sessions being organized by a local community of Python programmers in the Durgapur area of India, the Durgapur Linux Users Group Being an enthusiast, I immediately filled out the registration form, and joined the classes as scheduled. It was a really profound and rewarding experience for me, as it truly deepened my knowledge in the Python programming language. Seeing as the program benefited quite a number of burgeoning developers, I would like to suggest that we organize something of that sort here in Nigeria as well. Some benefits of doing this on IRC include: - Savings on data usage as IRC is text-based, and obviously quicker communication time. - Everyone can be connected using almost any device, since there are also IRC clients on smartphones. - People learn how to use IRC in the process. IRC is essential for getting on-demand help on lots of topic areas. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- *Link to DGPLUG's summer training website:* https://dgplug.org/summertraining15.html ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Following this, two questions stand out: 1. *Can we have an IRC Channel?* 2. *Can we organize such an IRC-based class?* Regards, Tosin Animashaun -- while (true){ idea++; implement(idea); } From hsysinfo at gmail.com Tue Dec 8 13:21:40 2015 From: hsysinfo at gmail.com (hsysinfo at gmail.com) Date: Tue, 8 Dec 2015 18:21:40 +0000 Subject: [python-nigeria] Hearty Introduction Message-ID: <1097250344-1449598900-cardhu_decombobulator_blackberry.rim.net-765085110-@b13.c1.bise7.blackberry> I'm Chukwudi Nwachukwu, iChux for short. I started coding in Python in 2004 and have never looked back since then. I once helped in the review of wxPython Application Development Cookbook by Packt Publishing in 2010. I would have also been involved in the next revision but for tight schedules which made me drop out of it. My daytime job involves working with Flask framework to produce wonderful cloud-based applications. I have had to work with APIs, both third party and in-house built ones to develop my applications, and I develop APIs too. At present, I'm working on a multitenant, one user one DB, application that will integrate all major payment APIs in Nigeria. It will also have cloud-based APIs to connect to it. I love tinkering with open source codes to known how I can squeeze the best out of it, and thanks to my IDEs. I am able to deploy to both Nginx (Ubuntu) and Apache (Windows and Ubuntu) and have them talk with each other in a seamless manner. All my applications can scale out based on my deployment scenarios. I look forward to meeting the admins of this list to push this group and Python development to greater heights in Nigeria. I want Nigeria to also organize PyCon Nigeria. I got to know of this list through Naomi Ceder. For our Django Girls Workshop we are in need of coaches who will give support to attending participants by way of taking them through the setup/installation of python plus one or two other requirements (Django etc), to the support and mentoring needed to take the participants through one or more tutorials. Who knows as coaches we might learn one or two things from our participants/workshop that will help us in writing our next killer app. Secondly I want to appreciate everyone for their commitment and support for the community, in light of the planned meetup we suggested that we come up with a date, agenda and mode of refreshment.? I will go ahead and drop my first contribution which is in relation to the agenda for the meetup.?- I would love for us to discuss on creating an open source project which the whole community can build/contribute to, off the top of my head I have messaging in mind. This is just an exercise to encourage collaboration, it could be something one of us is already working on and we could all work on it together. More suggestions from me soon. Thank you all and have a grand evening. First of all concerning Django Girls Workshop I think Aisha should let us know how many coaches we have that had sign on and to possibly see how we can organize a brush up or familiarization lecture before the main Workshop and or maybe if our lite meetup will be held before the workshop we can use the opportunity also to discuss that. Secondly I have a project that we can use to wet our Feet in making our first killer app that will assist the populace and it's a not for profit project whereby using open source will be better as Olabayo Onile-Ere suggested though we are waiting for more suggestions but just making mine. Lastly I appreciate every one of us for the Support, Commitment and the Upliftment we wish for the Community which I know we'll see the fruits in couple of months to now. Thanks once again for helping me rekindle the love I have for Python Programming and the Open Source Communities Generally. I wish us a blessed and fulfilled week ahead. The Django (and Python) community in The Netherlands and Europe is a very awsome one. Everyone is always trying to help each other and to share the knowledge. Because of this I joined Python Namibia this year and will do so next January. I am eager to help out fireing up the Python community in Nigeria in any way I can. I currently work for 1%Club https://onepercentclub.com/en/. We're a crowdfunding platform for small projects all over the world. Next year we want to set up a website targeted at Nigeria too. Good luck to you all and know that you have lots of support, not only from me but from Pythonists around the world! Kind regards & keep coding! In a world long long ago, as a newbie trying to get into web development without using PHP I settled on Python and decided to try Django because of all the hype. As a newbie it was terribly hard to understand and confusing. I ran away with so much speed that my feet touched the back of my head. Aisha, have you considered having the newbies take up either Flask or even web.py as a first framework before moving onto something more complex like Django? I know my advice might sound contrarian but not everyone is smart enough to understand Django as a first web framework of choice. Just my 2 cents, you dont have to take it because its really small. An open source community project seems like a really cool way to start, I guess to make it more interesting people can give pitches on the open source projects they would like the community to work on and we could put it to a vote by show of hands or e-voting. For my suggestions as regards agenda I would like to add discussions about the creation of an active psf group for promoting python in Nigeria, and brainstorming on different ways to actively promote python in Nigeria. For dates: Has any dates been selected for the meetup if not which dates is the venue free. I suppose a good time might be either on a Saturday or in the evening during the week after work. For Refreshments I am not sure how it will work I guess there are two ways to it: 1) A kind hearted Individual or company could sponsor refreshments 2) everyone brings a refreshment as a contribution which could range from Wine/Juice, to plastic cups, crisps/ biscuits e.t.c If everyone chips in a refreshment I am sure it could be covered. My suggestions though...... @Olamilekan Thanks for airing your concerns. Currently we have somewhat 8 coaches, somewhat because there is a 1 maybe, so technically 7 coaches. As regards brushing up on Django there is the DjangoGirls tutorial http://tutorial.djangogirls.org/en/index.html while during the workshop the attendees will be going through the tutorial you as their mentor will be there to explain things that are unclear and help them if they run into errors. As for brushing up you can do so with the tutorial, we're not asking you to be a Django expert, but the deal is you know more about programming than any of the attendees under your mentor ship and you can work with them in figuring it out. Usually how it works is, even after 10 coaches there are usually about 2-3 meta coaches who have more experience in Django and will be there to help out whatever problem the coach's might not be able to handle. More so, we encourage DjangoGirls attendees who have attended the workshops to volunteer as coaches because they learn something new each time and while teaching others they get better. I'll be happy to answer more questions. mErgencyNG sounds like it will bring about the much needed social change and looks like a possible interesting open source project. @Loek I sure can testify to the awesomeness of the Python/Django community. We will definitely appreciate and welcome your help in helping setup the Nigerian python community. Looking forward to PyCon Namibia @Eigie I do understand your concerns and I must confess it can be quite a bit challenging at first. That's why among other things we stress mentorship even after the workshop; also we take the pressure off and simplify the learning process by creating a really friendly and vibrant atmosphere for the attendees *No Pressure*. If you've gone through the DjangoGirls tutorial you might see what am referring to. Among other things we intend to equip our attendees with a community they can always turn to for support in walking through the learning curve. Again, we will be gathering amazing learning resources for attendees this is asides the Djangogirls tutorial. For example, Tracy Osborn is sponsoring our attendees with the 'hello web app' book written in a simplified easy to learn Django even for someone with no technical background. I am also currently making plans to create a meetup group so attendees if they choose to after the workshop can continue learning with the community for example 2hrs a week something like what Temi Adeoye is presently doing http://www.meetup.com/lagos-python-meetup/events/226773912/ What I discovered in learning as a newbie myself is nothing beats having people to learn with, and a mentor always willing to help you answer questions or explain difficult concepts. With all of these and many more we hope to really simplify learning for attendees and ensure they are having fun in the process. And another thing I might add is, it is more really about introducing them to the endless possibilities of the Python Language. I for one although learnt Django and find it useful but I am diverting to PyData for data mining & machine learning . The idea is using Python to harness what you are already passionate about, so in learning the basics during the workshop they can see and take advantage of the general purpose nature of Python. Hopefully I answered your questions, do feel free to let me know if I missed anything. @Chukwudi cool I didn't know about the nairaland post...Yaay!!! for publicity. We should probably write to Linda Ikeji too. Hope everyone is having an awesome-tastic week so far? Talking about Linda, who would be assigned to send her a mail? @meetup things I suggest that the date to be chosen not be first Friday or Saturday in a month because of traffic issues that characterizes Ikeja/Secretariat axis. These days, for those who do not know, are usually used by two religious bodies as their days of special worship and it leads to a lot of traffic issues on Lagos Ibadan expressway. For refreshments, I suggest we give generously through a pledge that the person who said it would be willing to fulfill. When we gather this, we would know what type of meal that would be made available. If we leave it to people coming with what they can afford, that is equally OK, but the people involved should also indicate what they would bring so that we can take stocks. How about a Google doc to collate the things for the meetup? I also would suggest, for our meetup, how about those of us who know technologically driven companies that could be of help. We do not want to be called bad names so we leave out those that are into politics and concentrate others. Does anyone know how to get across to Seun Osewa by mail? He used to communicate with me in the past but has stopped. I know that nairaland.com was developed with CherryPy. Seun is also a Pythonista but I do not know if he would want to come out. I guess Mark Essien of hotels.ng might be able to do that (@Aisha, can you handle this aspect?). All I have said here are my personal opinion and can be corrected. iChux? http://bit.ly/iscrape *Behind every no entry sign, there is a door.* On 16 December 2015 at 18:00, wrote: > Send python-nigeria mailing list submissions to > python-nigeria at python.org > > To subscribe or unsubscribe via the World Wide Web, visit > https://mail.python.org/mailman/listinfo/python-nigeria > or, via email, send a message with subject or body 'help' to > python-nigeria-request at python.org > > You can reach the person managing the list at > python-nigeria-owner at python.org > > When replying, please edit your Subject line so it is more specific > than "Re: Contents of python-nigeria digest..." > > > Today's Topics: > > 1. I don't know how responsive people might be. With my experience with events if there isn't any company available then it might be worth asking people to pledge what they might be able to afford to bring on the day which could range from a box of pizza to a pack of juice or even plastic cups. No pressure and every little counts. The google doc might be a way for people to drop what they will like to contribute not necessarily of monetary value but in form of things. *but that's still my opinion* I really don't know about Seun Osewa. I told Mark Essien about this mailing list so hopefully he is aware of the conversation of the meetup. I guess I could ping him to tell him about the lite meetup being planned just in case. But I guess a date still needs to be fixed and all planning needs to be underway and followed through then inviting other pythonistas with a specific date, time and agenda becomes easy *still my opinion* @Wale forgive my ignorance about the media kit for publicity. Kudos to you on setting up a Python Club in your Uni, I will really like to hear more about it. If you are referring to the meetup I think it's an awesome opportunity to meet fellow Pythonistas in a less formal setting to hear about what great works are already being done in Nigeria that some of us aren't aware of. This will be a good way to garner support from others and we can all harness our individual strengths. One of the things I definitely hope will be spoken about in the meetup is hosting a PyCon, but that can only be done by first having a subset of people who will be a part of the working PSF group to promote python in Nigeria. If we just jump right at hosting a PyCon then that might pose a big problem. At the moment nothing is being coordinated and to host a pycon we need a number(not many) of people willing to take full responsibility and actions to make it happen. As per the lite meetup Bayo and Chukwudi were planning am not sure how the preparations are going hopefully they will update us soon. For DjangoGirls Coach's dinner it's going to happen on the 20th of February immediately after the DjangoGirls event. it's also going to include the gathering and meetup of Nigerian Pythonistas. You and your Pythonista friends are also welcome to attend. I you've got any more questions do not hesitate to ping me.
