COM troubleshooting

I am just learning Python and want to use COM to talk to VB and Office.
I have entered several examples from the O'Reilly books and can talk to
Excel and Word Ok.
When I try to set up a COM server, as on p 250 of "The Quick Python
Book" it fails the test script TestCOM().
How do I troubleshoot this? I went up to the M$ site but couldn't find
any COM troubleshooting or error code info. I'm stuck!
