Code sharing and reuse, I'd say. The folks who use BSDish licenses are
interested in making their code available for reuse, no matter how the new
developer wishes to use it.

Note that Stallman claims code reuse as one of the goals of the GPV, but in
practice it is significantly harmed: more than a little code has had to be
rewritted instead of reused simply to avoid GPV infection.

...and if Cygnus Solutions is so successful, how is it that they're part of
Red Hat now?

There's been a lot of money sunk into open source stocks based on folks
wanting to get in on the opportunity when they start making money. That
implies a strong belief they will, but that belief has not been backed up
with real results.
