It really sounds like you want VNC -- virtual network computing.
It is free software that lets users share a desktop over
the internet.

An alternative is to use StarOffice on the client and
ask your users to download & install staroffice from sun.
It sure is easier to get people to download a free app
than to spend $500 on a license for MS office.
StarOffice is available at http://sun.com and is a complete
MS Office replacement. It does word, excel, powerpoint, everthing.
I guess you don't need python for this but I'm sure you'll
need it eventually!
