Seems you're using an outdated Debian package. This version had some issues. 
Please try whether the current version solves your problem.

Also it's of interest which version of the OpenLDAP libs python-ldap is 
using on your system. Please upgrade to latest OpenLDAP 2.1.x especially if 
still OpenLDAP 2.0.x is around.
