I know a lot of projects use Mercurial on Windows as well, I'm not
aware of any big problems with it.

That sounds pretty bad. By check out, do you mean the clone (getting
data over the wire) or the actual check out (setting up a working
directory)? I think I've heard of problems with the clone part before,
for them. We're actually working on improving clone size, though it
also seems to have to do with network reliability.
