[Python-Dev] VC 7.1 compiler for key developers - last call!

The offer of a free VC 7.1 compiler from Microsoft for key Python
developers is still open. We shouldn't switch to using the new
compiler now, but we should be prepared for having to switch at some
point in the future anyway (maybe for Python 2.4), and now is the time
to get the compiler.

The offer will get you the complete VC 7.1 Pro product from Microsoft
(which includes optimizer, debugger, docs, etc.). It requires Windows
NT/2000/XP; it definitely doesn't run on Windows 05/98/Me. (I've
tried!) If you can't afford to upgrade to Windows NT/2000/XP, I have
an unused WinNT box that I can donate.

I suggest that all the key developers of core Python or key 3rd party
components (e.g. Numeric, wxPython) request a copy. I need your
mailing address in order to give you your copy; if you already sent me
a message showing interest, please write again giving the full contact
info so I don't have to pull it off your website.

Last time I sent out this offer, I didn't get many responses. If you
think some important 3rd party project developers aren't reading this
list, please forward this to them!

For 3rd party developers who don't get a free VC 7.1 kit, the MS
compilers themselves are freely downloadable (though the optimizer and
debugger aren't). For pros and cons, please see the past discussion
on this topic. Getting the free kit doesn't mean a commitment to
use it!
