Also, the shell-script version of python-config uses the -f option of readlink and that option is not supported on OSX 10.8 (or older versions, I haven't looked at the 10.9 beta yet)

Furthermore the entire readlink command is not present in HP-UX (and possibly other "enterpricy" unix flavors)
