Neither of these problems are new to Python 2.6.5: see Issue7037 (test_asynchat) and Issue7040 (test_smtplib).  They have been fixed in trunk (2.7).  Since both failures existed in previous Python 2.6.x releases, my recommendation is to not treat them as release blockers but it would be good to try to fix them before a subsequent 2.6.6 release.
