Summary: Cannot ./configure on FC3 with gcc 3.4.2

Initial Comment:
Trying to run ./configure fails with the message:

configure: error: cannot run C++ compiled programs.

The config.log file reports:

version 'GCC_3.3' not found (required by
usr/lib/libstdc++.so.6)

FC3 is delivered with gcc 3.4.2.

What is the best path to a fix for this? Must I
regress to an older compiler?

This is clearly a bug in your gcc installation - perhaps
some library is not up-to-date, or libstdc++ was compiled
with the wrong compiler. You should report this to the FC3
developers.

As a work-around, you can configure your Python --without-cxx.
