Initial Comment:
I'm using Python 2.3.3 on SuSE Linux 8.2.

I'm trying to use the PyDateTime_Check() macro defined
in datetime.h, but it refers to the undeclared
PyDateTime_DateTimeType.  I added the following
declaration:

  PyAPI_DATA(PyTypeObject) PyDateTime_DateTimeType;

Looking at the source, I can why this doesn't help: it
is defined static.

That's so.  We ran out of time before giving datetime a 
usable C API.  There's a patch currently open, seeking to "fix 
that" for Python 2.4.
