Geoff Furnish has a patch for the configure script which might be reasonable.

Patch is old; needs to be updated relative to the current state of build control.  May need to be modified to suit recent versions of CXX (not sure on that one).

I'll post a message to the C++ SIG to see what the current state of this work is.
