The `_ast` module in pypy currently forces the user to specify the `lineno` and 
`col_offset` fields when constructing any of the AST objects that have them. For 
better conformance to CPython 2.6's behavior, these two attributes should be 
optional, and when they are not provided, should not be set.

Thanks for the report.  It's not obvious what is going wrong, because it
basically works when I try to do the same.  It looks like 3 different problems
together.  But the basic issue is that it really seems that
lib-python\2.5.2\traceback.py, linecache.py, or maybe os.py is corrupted.  Can
you try again to download and install from scratch?

r74045.  Linux 2.6.18-8.el5 x86_64, compiled w/32-bit python-2.6.5, gcc 4.1.1.
pypy-c w/jit.

Resulting binary works nicely, except I'm seeing a seg fault on code which is
incredibly sensitive.  That is, it comes and goes with slight changes in the
code, but it's entirely deterministic.  I've attached the resulting code, which
consistently segfaults for me:

Segmentation fault

Note that the code itself no longer makes much sense since most of it's been
removed, and it contains references to variables no longer used.. but removing
them can get rid of the segfault.  Almost every further simplification does the
same.  Some change the point at which it breaks instead.

In fact, if I run pypy-c from the home directory using "pypy-c sf9.py 100000"
instead, then I segfault at 128208 instead of 128894.

Even running the code under gdb gets rid of the segfault in Heisenbug fashion,
so I'm worried that it'll be hard to reproduce for anyone else.  I'm happy to
run whatever diagnostics would be useful.

Hey.

I can't reproduce the segfault (surprise, surprise), do you have original thing
that caused segfault with no parts removed? Also there is a couple of ways of
getting gdb traceback. First is to get core file "ulimit -c 100000000" should
do. Then you can do gdb pypy-c core and look there.

You might want a debug build of pypy - you grab sources from
/tmp/usession-trunk-<num or username>/testing_1 and run make debug (or make
lldebug) there. This will create a ./testing_1 executable which is pypy-c.

I grew frustrated with how sensitive my test case was and so looked
for other loop-intensive code I had around that might crash.  I found
another that segfaulted, and after a fair bit of work I managed to
reduce it to the following which asserts under an lldebug build for me.

    for i0 in ii:
        a = list()
        for i1 in ii:
            b = list()
            c += 1
            print b, i0, i1, c

which gives

PyPy assertion failed at implement.c:12750:
in pypy_g__check_typeid: invalid type_id

changing the ranges to range(100), range(4) gives

PyPy assertion failed at implement.c:65795:
in pypy_g_SemiSpaceGC_set_forwarding_address: unexpected GCFLAG_EXTERNAL

or, if I print 'a' instead of b, I get

Invalid RPython operation (NULL ptr or bad array index)

Random corruption symptoms 4tw!

Miscellaneous notes: the above only crashes for me when redirected to
a file, but I have other cases which crash without redirection.

Removing the print statement or lowering the range limits sufficiently
avoids the crash.

It indeed looks like a bit random memory corruption. I could not reproduce it
though :( Can you try compiling with different versions of gcc and see if it
affects anything?

Print is needed, since print forces locals to be real objects (and not virtuals).

Originally compiled with 4.1.1.  Recompiled with gcc 4.5.0 -O3; -O2; and -O1,
crash repeats.  Can't compile at -O0 because trackgcroot.py complains.

Think we've probably hit diminishing returns if you can't reproduce. :-/

Hi Armin,
Thanks for your fast response. I have:
1. Downloaded again.
2. Decompress using Winzip instead of 7zip to a different folder.
3. First execution:
