On the website: http://pyopenssl.sourceforge.net/ I see that the most
recent release was in 2004. Is this project discontinued?

The original maintainer seems to have moved on to other things.

I've been keeping a fork up to date with various patches at 
http://trac.dave.cridland.net/ if that helps, but it's probably worth 
noting that the 2004 release still works fine if you prefer something 
that's seen more deployment.
