Thanks for pointing this out, Tara, and thanks Steve for passing it on. I had a look at the page and can't find the link in question; has it already been removed, or am I just looking in the wrong place? It happened to come across a different place I'm subscribed to... I'm not sure I'm suspicious enough to completely endorse their conclusion, but here's what a part of the gcc team responded - the report of their "bad links" were on sites that mirror old libstdc++ content and are way out of date (the official pages have long since had the reference to the expired site removed). Do we deserve praise or blame for reacting more politely, I wonder? :) Just FYI to people who reacted to our go-round with this. -- mats === > > Good Afternoon! > > I?ve just been looking at your website and I came across these webpages: [snip] > I thought I should let you know so that you can remove the link. As I'm sure you realise, we can't remove the links because they're not on our website. Please stop this link farming, your site has already been reported to google so will not get any boost in page rank from your pathetic attempts to promote it. Also, your pathetic attempts to create links from the mailing list archives don't even work because the links get removed, see: https://gcc.gnu.org/ml/gcc-help/2019-07/msg00050.html https://gcc.gnu.org/ml/gcc-help/2019-07/msg00051.html You're getting blocked from posting to our lists now, goodbye. We have this issue on a number of other pages (in fact, we have some past history of people (apparently) trying to improve their "search rank" by moving their entry up). Alphabetical is at least a fair, if arbitrary, approach (waiting for somebody to rename their company AAAABest, paper-telephone-book style :)) ... do add a note to the effect that the list should be kept alphabetised to avoid further confusion. Ummm, the instructions suggest that's not a good choice, notice the "please don't use spaces" bit.... maybe it's irritating, but we do prefer people actually read the stuff.... Creating a Wiki account In order to sign up for a wiki account, please go to the Create new account form, enter your account name (using the format FirstnameLastname to avoid issues - please don't use spaces in the name)
