Message-ID: *Welcome Volunteers!* Thank you, all, who've stepped up to volunteer - you are the foundation of the PyCon community! There is a speaker and volunteer orientation, Thursday evening, at 8:00pm, after the swag bag stuffing party, in the Green Room. If you are unable to attend the meeting, that is fine. Instead please stop by the Green Room, preferably in the morning between 7:00am and 9:00am. The Green Room is located in the 212 meeting room on the second floor above registration. Small deeds can make a big difference. The Lunch room has changed for Wednesday and Thursday , and all the signs and print materials are wrong. We'll need some help directing people for lunch on Wednesday and Thursday. <1hr. You will not miss lunch yourself. Signup: http://goo.gl/V1Ilr We still have 15 open Session Staff positions for both runners and chairs. If you have not, please considersigning up for one of the remaining slots. While you're at it, grab some Tutorial Host slots too - same deal: direct people to get to the right rooms on time. Short; easy; helpful. Here are low commitment needs we have: - WED-SAT: Registration desk (an hour or two at the peak times can really make a difference); - http://goo.gl/y5cXA - WED-THU: Tutorial greeters - help get people to their tutorials; <1hr - WED-THU: Lunch Hosts (direct people); <1hr - http://goo.gl/V1Ilr - THU 4-8pm: SWAG - *Stuff 10 Bags!* (~1/2 hr; but can be fun, addictive!); -* just show up!* Links to information and signups are at http://us.pycon.org/2013/about/volunteers Check current needs at http://goo.gl/P3CAm Don't take on too much - what you do helps and is enough! Remember to encourage others to volunteer. My first PyCon someone tossed me a volunteer shirt: "I'm not a volunteer." "You are now!" A half-hour or hour of time isn't much, and it's a great way to meet people you might not otherwise meet. Remember to have lots of fun. Don't forget to check "events" on guidebook (guidebook.com). Quick question, for tutorial host do you hang around beyond the 20-before/20-after to help with non-TA duties for the duration? Also, anyone know of any off-list room shares available for the evening of the 13th? I was hoping for something closer to the venue for that evening. I am covered on the 12th and 14th - 18th. Thanks! Would you sign up for Tutorial Host slots at http://goo.gl/p8cDt? Thanks for signing up for Tutorial T/A! :-) If an instructor asks you to hang around the duration, that will answer your question. Otherwise, there is no specific need to hang around Tutorials beyond the initial 40 minutes. If there are immediate needs, Stewart or Doug or I will ask for willing volunteers on the spot. You can always contribute to the registration desk. Thanks for Volunteering! - Yarko > Also, anyone know of any off-list room shares available for the evening of > the 13th? See https://us.pycon.org/2013/community/volunteer/tutorial_hosts/ for more info. Online registration for tutorials appears to still be live, and I would expect it to be live through Monday (though I don't know, am not sure). I don't know but my expectation would be that when the onsite registration team & computers take over control of registrations that's it - one data source only! I'd expect "online" registration to go away sometime between Monday afternoon/evening and Tuesday afternoon/evening. In other words, if you're not registered by Sunday, I think you're pushing your luck. According to the registration screen at this moment, the only sold-out class is "Python for Data Analysis". > Joel > > On Mar 9, 2013, at 3:12 PM, Douglas Napoleone wrote: > > > > On Sat, Mar 9, 2013 at 4:08 PM, Joel Garza wrote: > >> I signed up for tutorial host, placing my slots based on the tutorial I >> would probably register for. Message-ID: All, Thank you, everyone, for volunteering to help out. PyCon is a 100% volunteer run effort, and it would not be possible without you. While the volunteer organizers and staff plan things out before the event, once it starts, all of the real work is done by you; the onsite- volunteer. Without your hard work and sacrifice, there would not be a PyCon. As PyCon grows it has become harder and harder to remain a volunteer effort, but everyone involved feels this is critical to the community nature of the event. This year we have expanded the size of the conference by 20%. 20% more people, 20% more talks, 20% more special events. Of course this means 20% more volunteer slots and 20% more volunteers. And the community has come through. I am once again amazed and humbled. For those of you whom have joined in the past few days, there are a few things you should know: * OPS, and the Green room are in the 200 area rooms on the 2nd floor above the main lobby. * For those arriving early, we will be doing setup in OPS, starting today. Most of the real work will start tomorrow, Tuesday. Feel free to stop by and say hello. * The green room is open to you for the duration of the conference * For those helping out with registration or tutorials on Wednesday and Thursday, please stop by OPS when you can and ask for Yarko, Stuart, or Doug to receive instructions. * After the bag stuffing party on Thursday (4pm in the 200 rooms), there will be an orientation for speakers, session staff, and general volunteers (8:00pm). Please try to attend both if you can. * There is still a bug in the session staff app, where some people are showing up as a blank string. The web team is working on a fix. * Please feel free to use this list to communicate issues and problems, as well at the #pycon irc channel on freenode.net * I (Doug Napoleone) can be reached directly at doug.napoleone at gmail.comand via my cell phone: 1-774-644-0049 We still have 15 open slots for session staff, and registration can always use more help. We can fill in these slots by recruiting people on-site. Please spread the word. Once again, thank you all for stepping forward. That's all I can think of at the moment for Thursday. Note: If / when you don't know how to help, remember: you can be a worker bee (and do what told), or you can be a social bee, and take initiave. One of the most useful things is to be able to help people when they don't know where to go. A good exercise: - Study the Event Schedule (available @ Registration); - In particular, open and study "SERVICES AND SPECIAL EVENTS" for Thursday, and be sure you know what is going on, and where that is. - Then, walk around and look for people look "lost" or puzzled, and ask if you can help them find something. This, throughout the conference, is a most useful way to volunteer and meet people (and you might make some friends too!). NOTE: For the main conference: - We still are in need of 11 Session Runners, and one Char for the conference proper. - Please see http://us.pycon.org/2013/schedule/sessions to spot the needs are (click on the Session number to volunteer; Thank you for your continued help, and see you all tomorrow! Please remember - you make our community, not just with volunteering on Registration or Sessions, but every time you notice someone who seems lost and you offer help, every time you participate in code, a discussion, everything you do is a contribution to building this - our community, yours and mine and everyone's here. Thank you, each of you, for being just who you are!
