Because of two things: 1. We want to create enough value in the main conference that people should see this as an investment. By attending the conference we will enrich our knowledge, which is something important for the conference attendees. In the 2017 edition we actually had a full house during the weekdays, so that means people are interested in coming in a conference which provides value. 2. Having devsprints in the weekend help us to organize it in any company premises. This provides certainty that we will not disrupt the day to day operation of the venue sponsor. > > I would highly recommend organizing the conference during the weekend and > the developer sprints during the week, which is how PyCon US 17 happened. To elaborate on this, we will strive (as we did last year) to get a speaker lineup that will justify the potential holiday that people may have to take to attend the conference. Additionally, PyCon Pune is really about the developer sprints with talks being an added (very lucrative!) bonus, so we want to make sure that we convenience those who see value in the sprints. >> Finally, I would suggest using something like doodle (http://doodle.com/) >> for voting on which dates are comfortable with the most people. We use Doodle for the kernel meetups because the idea there is simple - the majority wins and we have full control over other variables. That is not the case here though since venue availability and other logistics will also end up playing a factor and using Doodle will send out the wrong message of "majority wins" when that may well not be true. Yeah, the venue bit is secondary for me personally since I am confident we can come up with something more reliable this time, but I know Kushal has a different opinion about it :) > Finally, are there any tutorial sessions being planned for this PyCon > Pune? There were none the last time, IIRC. I think there is enough > interest in basic and advanced tutorials, on topics ranging from Python > to the ecosystem of libraries we use on a daily basis. That idea is still kinda in play. It's not final yet because we don't know yet how to schedule them in a manner that does not undermine the developer sprints and talks. Nisha had expressed interest in doing a Python for kids tutorial and that seems like something that can run in parallel with the dev sprints, but for anything else, we will have to think a bit more. Also there is the problem of trying to do many things at once, we want to make sure we build up slowly through the years and not commit a massive budget in just our second conference :) That said, I'd say keep specific suggestions for tutorials coming in and we can then figure out if/how we can accommodate them. If nothing, we could do something via reserved-bit that can lead up to the main conference. Again, this is what PyCon US traditionally follows, AFAIK. Organizing the tutorial sessions alongside dev sprints also makes sense because not all conference participants might be up for the dev sprints. > Also there is the problem of trying to do many things at once, we want > to make sure we build up slowly through the years and not commit a > massive budget in just our second conference :) > Ahh. Monies. Makes sense to take things slowly and be cautious with the budget. Also, I apologize if I'm poking my nose but is there a sponsorship prospectus being worked on? I couldn't find one on last year's PyCon Pune webpage. > That said, I'd say keep specific suggestions for tutorials coming in and > we can then figure out if/how we can accommodate them. If there is a different thread or avenue where I can follow discussions on the organization of upcoming PyCon Pune, please let know. Again, may be possible at reserved-bit, but it doesn't make sense to make it part of the conference since we can't scale that well in the makerspace. > Also, I apologize if I'm poking my nose but is there a sponsorship > prospectus being worked on? Don't apologize :) Yes, Sayan is working on the prospectus and once the date is final we should have one ready to send out to prospective sponsors. > Finally, I apologize to everyone for muddying this thread, which was > meant for something else entirely. This is the list to stay in touch with the organization and to volunteer as well if you have the bandwidth. We should probably look at other venues as well if we want to keep 18th as an option and also to give us an alternative to bargain against. Any preferences? We can reach out to Conrad (it's on Mangaldas Road and has similar capacity) and Radisson Blu (similar capacity again) as options. Any other options? Independent of this, lets decide on a date and start with the sponsorship brochures. Those should go out in the next week or so. Those should go out in the next week or so. Yes, the main design work is still in progress. But, the initial website is almost done. Hopefully, it should be deployed within next 1-2 days. -- Sayan Chowdhury Senior Software Engineer, Fedora Engineering - Emerging Platform GPG Fingerprint : 0F16 E841 E517 225C 7D13 AB3C B023 9931 9CD0 5C8B Proud to work at The Open Organization! The third options is the one we all going ahead with i.e. February 8 - February 11, 2018. The reasons for not selecting the other two was: 1st option: As Shakthi mentioned about the festivals clashing with this dates, this option was ruled out. 2nd option: The venue has been booked so we cannot choose this option. So, we were only left out with the third option. -- Sayan Chowdhury Senior Software Engineer, Fedora Engineering - Emerging Platform GPG Fingerprint : 0F16 E841 E517 225C 7D13 AB3C B023 9931 9CD0 5C8B Proud to work at The Open Organization!
