PyConline AU 2021 is thrilled to announce it's call for proposals is now
open!

PyConline AU will run from September 10 - 12 2021, in UTC+10 hours, online.

We are welcoming submissions for presentations -- both live and pre-record
-- from now through *June 10 2021 AoE *(anywhere on earth!)

Our Friday will host returning specialist tracks Education, DevOops,
Snakeoil Academy, and Science, Data, and Analytics, and our weekend will
host our general Python content.

We are also seeking volunteers to help run social events! Attendees
thoroughly enjoyed our virtual social events last year, and we want to
repeat that again! Submit your expression of interest at:

I have no idea who will be nominated for this year's Board. I know I will
not run, and I know I have no current plans to nominate anyone.

That said, I feel we should have more Directors from the Global South. Last
year, I myself chose, in my votes, to put a high priority on that.

I did not vote solely on that basis, in fact, I found only a subset of such
candidates "amazingly compelling" and others merely good. But I also chose
not to "spend" my votes on some candidates who were, like myself, in
comparatively privileged social positions... Notwithstanding that many of
them are likewise amazingly dedicated to the Python community.

I was somewhat disappointed that a couple of the candidates I so favored
lost by very narrow margins to other great folks who are probably more
familiar to the existing PSF membership. Everyone on the Board now, and
historically, is committed and remarkable. But perhaps others share my
values on this and will want to think of that one the actual candidates
become known.

Hello,

It is sad for me to be in such a position to reach out. The situation in my
country, Mauritius, is serious. I know that the PSF's objectives are
different from this situation, however free speech and internet privacy are
about to be breached.

On 14th of April 2021[1], while the country was under national lockdown due
to the global pandemic, the Information and Communication Technologies
Authority of Mauritius (ICTA) which is a parastatal body regulating ICT
laws in the country released a proposal for intercepting, monitoring,
archiving and manipulating social media traffic using a man-in-the-middle
style attack[2].

This proposal is mostly similar to what Kazakhstan has done. It involves
the installation of a custom root certificate to enable decryption of
traffic by the ICTA.

My humble request to the community is to share this, send your comments on
this proposal to socialmediaconsultation at icta.mu and to support in this
fight.

I am sorry to learn of these circumstances. I cannot speak for the PSF, but
I know as a former officer that its non-profit status could be jeopardised
were it to promote political ideas of any kind.

I note with some regret that this message has only come to my
attention after the closing date for responses to the public consultation.

As a fellow human being I sympathise with your community, and I hope many
other readers will individually support your calls to action as I intend to.
